Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team had a busy first three innings as the Owls scored 16 runs before securing the 22-14 non-conference win at No. 17 Lynn University on Tuesday afternoon to wrap up their spring trip to the Sunshine State. With the win, the Owls snap a three-game losing streak and improve to 6-9-1 while the Fighting Knights fall to 17-10.
Redshirt sophomore
Ryan Kaplan (Fishkill, N.Y.) and redshirt freshman
Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) led the Owls at the plate both going 4-for-5 while Kaplan recorded a team-high five RBI and Lamberti collected a team-high four runs. Junior
Kyle Hart (North Branford, Conn.) registered not only his first home run of the season but the first home run for the Owls this year.
Senior
Jason Harper (Saugus, Mass.) earned his third win of the season as came in for the Owls in the bottom of the fifth and pitched a total of 2.2 innings. Harper allowed two runs off three hits while registering two walks and a strikeout.
The Owls managed to score a run in the first thanks to an RBI double from Hart before another RBI double, this time from senior
Alex Wichmann (Granby Conn.) in the top of the second, pushed the Owls' lead to 2-0. However, Lynn answered right back in the bottom of the second with two runs to tie the game at 2-2.
In the top of the third, the Owls continued to swing bats and manage to tack on three more runs to extend their lead to 5-2. Lamberti started off the inning with a single to center field before advancing to third off a single up the middle from Hart. With no outs, senior
Jake Lieberman (Commack, N.Y.) and freshman
Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) both recorded back-to-back RBI as the duo allowed Lamberti and Hart to score. Junior
Greg Zullo (Branford, Conn.) collected the final RBI of the inning as Lieberman tagged up on third and advanced home on the sacrifice fly to left field.
Southern Connecticut's three-run lead didn't last long as the Fighting Knights scored three runs off two hits in the bottom of the third to tie the game, for a second time, 5-5.
However, the Owls came alive in the top of the fourth scoring 11 runs off seven hits and a Lynn error to push their lead to 11, 16-5. During that fourth inning, Southern Connecticut had 14 at bats while five players went up to the plate twice, but this time facing Lynn's second pitching change in the inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Lynn battled back to within five, 16-11 after collecting six runs, all earned.
Following a scoreless fifth inning by both teams, Lynn continued to chip away at the Owls' lead as the Fighting Knights scored a run in the bottom of sixth to make a four-run game, 16-12, but in the top of the seventh Southern Connecticut added another three runs to push its lead back up to six, 19-12.
In the bottom of the seventh, Lynn added another run to bring the score to 19-13, but Southern Connecticut still managed to tack on three more runs to bring the score to 22-13. Lynn threatened the Owls in the bottom of the ninth, but the Fighting Knights were only allowed to score one run before the Owls ended threat securing the win.
The Owls are back in action this Saturday, March 25 at Pace University. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
