PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team was swept in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader by Pace University at Finnerty Field. The Owls dropped the first game, 13-1, and were also edged, 4-3 (14 innings), in the nightcap. With the losses, Southern Connecticut falls to 6-12-1 and 0-3 while Pace improves to 14-7 and 3-0.

GAME 1: Pace 13 | So. Conn. 1

Sophomore Griffin Bremer (Higganum, Conn.) picked up the loss for the Owls as he allowed six runs off seven hits over a total of 2.1 innings on the mound. He also recorded three walks.

Freshman Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) and senior Jake Lieberman (Commack, N.Y.) recorded a team-high two hits each while Lieberman registered the Owls' only RBI of game one.

Southern Connecticut finished the day going 8-for-33 at the plate against Pace's bullpen.

Pace scored first in the bottom of the third to take a commanding 6-0 lead before tacking on three more runs over the next two innings to extend its lead to 9-0.

In the top of the sixth, Southern Connecticut scored its single run of game one thanks to an RBI single from Lieberman. With one out, Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) began the rally advancing to first off being hit by a pitch. Senior Jake DeRosa (North Haven, Conn.) then entered for the Owls as a pinch runner for Lamberti before advancing to second off a groundout to second. Lieberman was the next Owl up and connected on a pitch to centerfield where DeRosa advanced to third before scoring. But, the rally ended due to Lieberman recording the final out of the inning.

However, Pace added two more runs in the top of the seventh to secure the 13-1 win over Southern Connecticut in game one.

GAME TWO: Pace 4 | So. Conn. 3 (14 innings)

Sophomore Christopher Ramos (Shelton, Conn.) earned the tough loss for the Owls as he pitched 0.1 innings and allowed one run off one hit. He also walked two batters.

Senior Jake Paul (Kingston, N.Y.) and freshman Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) led the Owls at the plate with three hits each while Paul collected a team-high two RBI. Also, three different players registered two hits each as the team finished game two with a total of 15 hits.

Pace scored quickly in the bottom of the first as the Setters took the early 2-0 lead after scoring two runs off one hit and two Southern Connecticut errors.

Shortly after, Southern Connecticut cut the lead in half, 2-1, in the top of the third as Paul hit a double down the left field line to advance junior Greg Zullo (Branford, Conn.) to third and allowing Lieberman to cross home.

In the top of the fifth, Southern Connecticut struck again as the Owls took their first lead of the day, 3-2. With two outs, Zullo began the threat with a single through the right side before a single to center field by Paul put two runners on base. Still with two outs on the scoreboard, DeMartino was able to move Paul and allow Zullo to score giving the Owls the one-run lead.

However, in the bottom of fifth, Pace tied the game at 3-3 after scoring a run with two outs and a runner on base.

After a scoreless seven inning, Pace scored the winning run off an RBI single up the middle with one out and two runners on second and third.
