Box Score

ALBANY, N.Y. - Despite a three-hit performance from freshman Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.), the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team fell in the final game of a three-game series at Saint Rose on Sunday afternoon by the score of 6-3. Southern Connecticut finished the weekend going 1-for-2 against the Golden Knights and currently have a record of 9-20-1 and 2-11 while the hosts improve to 11-11 and 7-2 on the year.

DeMartino led the Owls at the plate with a team-high three hits and two RBI while junior Greg Zullo (Branford, Conn.) collected one of the Owls' three RBI of the afternoon. As a team, Southern Connecticut went 8-for-31 at the plate while Saint Rose went 10-for-28.

Freshman Quantique White (New London, Conn.) picked up the loss for Southern Connecticut as the rookie allowed three runs, six hits, a walk and five strikeouts over 6.0 innings. Red-shirt junior Cole Bryant (Newington, Conn.) pitched the final two innings and registered only two hits.

Southern Connecticut struck first as DeMartino flied out to left field, advancing freshman Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) home to give the Owls the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Lamberti began the inning getting on first after being walked and stealing second. Junior Kyle Hart also walked giving the Owls runners on first and second with no outs as Zullo moved the runners into scoring position after grounding out to the pitcher. After DeMartino's sacrifice fly, senior Jake Lieberman (Commack, N.Y.) ended the inning as he collected the final out of the frame.

Saint Rose answered right back in the bottom of the second scoring four runs on three hits and an error to take its first lead of the game, 4-1, before extending its lead to 6-1 after scoring another two runs in the bottom of the sixth, 6-1.

Southern Connecticut's last rally of the game came in the top of the eighth as the Owls managed to score two mores runs before the Golden Knights secured game three, 6-3. Lamberti began the threat with a single to center before stealing second while Hart collected the Owls' first out of the inning. Zullo was able to connect on a pitch that sent the ball to right field, allowing Lamberti to score and Zullo advancing to second. DeMartino was able to capitalize on the pitching change by Saint Rose and single down the right field line allowing Zullo to score and brought the score to within three, 6-3. Southern Connecticut's threat didn't stop there as the visitors loaded the bases, with just one out, but came up short as the Owls ended the threat with the final two outs.

Southern Connecticut returns to action on April 19th against Adelphi. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. at The Ballpark at SCSU.
