MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team was swept in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon by No. 5 Southern New Hampshire by the scores of 11-0 and 7-5. Following today's loss, the Owls drop to 10-22-1 and 3-7 while the Penmen imrpove to 34-3 and 11-1 in the Northeast Division.

GAME 1: So. New Hampshire 11 | So. Conn. St. 0

Freshman Brandon Rentas (Wallingford, Conn.) picked up the loss for the Owls and is now 2-4 on the year. Over 6.2 innings, Rentas allowed 11 hits, eight runs (four earned) and four strikeouts.

Senior Jake Paul (Kingston, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 at the plate while freshman Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) and redshirt freshman Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) collected a hit apiece.

Southern Connecticut's first threat of the game came in the top of the first as junior Kyle Hart (North Branford, Conn.) was in scoring position to give the Owls their first run of the game, but a ground out to the pitcher ended the threat and the half inning. Southern New Hampshire then went on to score two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead over the Owls.

After a scoreless four innings, Southern Connecticut made a second threat against the Penmen as Lamberti found himself on second after beginning the inning with a single up the middle then stealing second. But, the Owls threat ended when Paul struck out at the plate. Similar to the first, Southern New Hampshire recorded another two runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend its lead to 4-0.

The Penmen kept the Owls at bay in the top of the seventh before tacking on four more runs to take a commanding 8-0 lead over the Owls entering the eighth.

Following another 1-2-3 inning for the Owls, Southern New Hampshire continued to swing the bat and added another three runs in the bottom of the eighth to put the game away 11-0.

GAME 2: So. New Hampshire 7 | So. Conn. St. 5

Sophomore Chris Ramos (Shelton, Conn.) collected the loss on the mound for the Owls as he recorded a stat line of three hits, three runs,a walk and eight strikeouts over 4.0 innings.

Redshirt sophomore Ryan Kaplan (Fishkill, N.Y.) led the Owls at the plate after going 2-for-3 with a run while Hart went 1-for-4 with a run and a team-high four RBI.

Game two started a little bit different than game one as the Owls took their first lead of the day, 1-0. With one out, Ethan Joyce (Exeter, N.H.) began the rally a double to right center before stealing third during a Hart at bat. Hart was able to reach first on a throwing error by the shortstop and Joyce scored.

In the bottom of the second Southern New Hampshire tied the game at 1-1 after Ryan Gendron crossed home after stealing home. However, Southern Connecticut had a huge four-run rally in the top of the third to expand its lead 5-1. Kaplan began the inning with a single to shot before the Owls collected two quick outs. With two outs, now both Kaplan and Joyce are in scoring position as Hart hits his second home run of the season. Bases have cleared before Paul and senior Jake Lieberman (Commack, N.J.) get on base after Paul was hit by a pitch and Lieberman doubled to center, allowing Paul to score.

However, in the following half inning, the game decided to shift in favor of the Penmen as the hosts scored two runs in third and three runs in the fifth to take their first lead of game two, 6-5, at the end of the fifth.

Southern Connecticut's final threat of game two came in the top of the seventh as the Owls had runners on first and second with just one out, but Paul ended the threat hitting into a double play.

Southern New Hampshire sealed game two in the bottom of the eighth, putting the hosts up 7-5 after scoring its final run of the game off a wild pitch from Ramos.
