Box Score 2 NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team dropped a pair of Northeast-10 Conference games to Merrimack College on Saturday afternoon at the Warrior Baseball Diamond. The Warriors took game one by the score of 6-4, after recording a five-run rally in the bottom of the sixth, before taking the nightcap from the Owls by the score of 8-3.
Following the pair of losses, Southern Connecticut falls to 8-15-1 and 1-5 on the year while the Warriors improve to 16-9 and 6-2.
GAME 1: Merrimack 6 | So. Conn. 4 Senior
Jake Lieberman (Commack, N.Y.) and senior
Alex Wichmann (Granby, Conn.) led the Owls in game one with a team-high two hits apiece while Lieberman and Wichman recorded a run and an RBI.
Sophomore
Griffin Bremer (Higganum, Conn.) picked up the loss as he allowed five runs off seven hits as well as registered three walks and two strikeouts over 5.1 innings on the mound. Freshman
Shawn Urbano (Stamford, Conn.) came in to relieve Bremer during the bottom of the sixth and recorded two hits and two strikeouts.
Southern Connecticut struck early scoring two runs in the top of the first thanks to back-to-back RBI from Lieberman and freshman
Tyler Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.). However, Merrimack answered right back, cutting the Owls' lead in half, 2-1, as Sean O'Neill doubled to right center allowing a runner to score.
Following a scoreless second inning, Wichman recorded a two-run homer to extend the Owls' lead to three, 4-1, but Merrimack would rally back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs to take its first lead of the game, 6-4.
Southern Connecticut threatened Merrimack with runners in scoring position in both the eighth and ninth inning, but Merrimack would stop both rallies to secure the home victory.
GAME 2: Merrimack 8 | So. Conn. 3 Senior
Jake Paul (Kingston, N.Y.) led the Owls in game two with a team-high three hits as well as three RBI.
Freshman
Brandon Rentas (Wallingford, Conn.) earned the loss as he allowed 11 hits, five runs and three strikeouts over seven innings of pitching. Senior
Austin Brochu (Winsted, Conn.) pitched 1.0 innings and recorded two hits and three runs.
Merrimack took the early 2-0 lead at the end of the first as the Warriors recorded two runs off two hits and a Southern Connecticut error. But, in the top of the third Southern Connecticut tied the game at 2-2 thanks to a two-run RBI from Paul after the Owls loaded the bases with two outs.
In the bottom of the fifth, Merrimack regained its lead, 4-2, after scoring two runs off off two hits before Southern Connecticut cut the lead to one, 4-3, after Paul homered to left field. However from that point on, Merrimack tacked on four more runs to secure the 8-3 win over the Owls.
