MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Barry University and Lynn University as part of the 2016 Barry University Volleyball Classic on Saturday afternoon. The Owls fell in match one to Fighting Knights in straight sets, 3-0, before falling short to the Buccaneers, 3-1.
MATCH 1: Lynn 3 | So. Conn. St. 0
SET SCORES: 25-16 (LYN), 25-18 (LYN) and 25-20 (LYN)
TEAM RECORDS: So. Conn. St. (4-4) | Lynn (5-1)
LYNN LEADS 1-0: Southern Connecticut could only play catch-up in set one as Lynn found themselves up 10, 23-13, before winning set one, 25-16.
A BATTLE FOR SET TWO: Set two began with both teams battling for the lead, but Lynn secured the 2-0 lead heading in the third and final set, 25-18.
SO CLOSE: Down by seven, 13-6, Southern Connecticut slowly crept in on the Fighting Knights as an attack error brought the Owls to within four, 24-20, but the Owls fell short 25-20.
STAT BREAKDOWN
- Junior
Alexandria Jurgens (Cornwall, Conn.) led the Owls with six kills and a hitting percentage of .357.
- Sophomore
Leanna Jadus (Long Beach, Calif.) and freshman
Anna Venard (Thornton, Colo.) collected a team-high seven digs while Jadus registered four kills, an assist and a service ace.
- In set one, Southern Connecticut hit a team-high nine kills as well as posted a hitting percentage of .158 in set two.

SET SCORES: 25-18 (BAR), 25-23 (SCS), 25-18 (BAR) and 25-17 (BAR)
TEAM RECORDS: So. Conn. St. (4-5) | Barry
OWLS FALL SHORT: Southern Connecticut came up short in set one, 25-18, despite battling back and tying Barry, 18-18.
COME FROM BEHIND WIN: The Owls trailed for the first 11 points until an attack error by Barry shifted the momentum of the set. Barry managed to tie the frame at 23-23, but a kill from freshman
Gabriela Vazquez (Meriden, Conn.) and a service ace from
Bridgette Walsh (Baldwin, N.Y.) sealed the win for the visitors.
BARRY TAKES SET THREE: Southern Connecticut was unable to take the 2-1 lead after Barry University secured set three, 25-15.
BARRY WITH THE WIN: Barry secured the win, 25-17, as well as held the Owls from taking the lead after the Owls battled back to within four, 15-11.
STAT BREAKDOWN:
- Jadus led the Owls' offense with a team-high nine kills and 11 digs.
- Venard also recorded an impressive game as the freshman recorded a team-high 15 digs.
- Nimz assisted 21 of the Owls' 31 kills in the 3-1 loss.
UP NEXT: Southern Connecticut returns to action this week as the Owls host Bloomfield College on September 13th and welcome Queens (N.Y.) College on September 16th. Both games are slated for a 7 p.m. start time at Pelz Gym.
