OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team dropped two-straight non-conference matches to NYIT and Bloomfield College on Saturday afternoon as part of a tri-match at Recreaction Hall on the campus of NYIT. Following the two losses, the Owls are now 1-3 on the season.
MATCH 1: NYIT 3, SCSU 1
SET SCORES: 25-14 (NYIT), 25-17 (NYIT), 25-21 (SCSU) and 25-17 (NYIT)
Junior
Nicole Hauser (Stevens Point, Wisc.) and freshman
Jillian Chambers (Shelby Township, Mich.) led the Owls' offensive charge with 11 kills each in match one while Hauser earned her first double-double of the season. Along with the 11 kills, Hauser registered 14 digs, seven assists and three blocks assists. Chambers chimed in with six digs and a block assists. Junior setter
Alexandra Nimz (Littleton, Colo.) assisted 29 of the Owls' 45 kills while freshman Anna Vernard (Thornton, Colo.) collected a team-high 15 digs.
NYIT opened the match with a 9-0 run before pushing its lead to 18-7 heading into an Owls' timeout. Southern Connecticut was unable to play catch-up as the Bears closed out the frame with a 7-7 run.
Set two was a little bit different than set one as the Owls managed to stay within reach of the Bears and rallied to within five, 18-13. However, NYIT kept its composure and secured the 2-0 lead heading into the final frame.
Southern Connecticut managed to surprise NYIT as the Owls opened the set with a 9-5 lead before NYIT tied the frame at 12-12. The Bears took the lead, 15-13, but Southern Connecticut rallied together a 6-1 run to regain the lead and forced a Bears' timeout. Up by two, 23-21, Southern Connecticut secured the third set win and forced a fourth set.
Southern Connecticut continued its mometum into the next frame with a 5-0 run to start, but was unable to secure the lead as NYIT claimed the final set, 25-17.

SET SCORES: 25-19 (BC), 25-22 (BC) and 25-18 (BC)
Sophomore
Leanna Jadus (Long Beach, Calif.) led the team in match two with a team-high 10 kills as well as chipped in four service aces and six digs. Nimz recorded another 29 assist game while Chambers added five kills and seven digs to her season total.
Bloomfield opened the first set with a four-point lead, 10-6, but a 9-4 run gave the Owls their first lead of the match, 15-14, forcing a timeout by Bloomfield. Southern Connecticut managed to keep its lead out of reach until Bloomfield regained the lead, 20-19, and closed out the frame with a 5-0 run.
Coming out of the break, Southern Connecticut managed to capitalize on offense and opened the second set with an 8-5 lead. With the score tied at 12-12, Bloomfield rallied together a short run and took set two from the Owls 25-22.
Southern Connecitcut kept within arms reach of Bloomfield in the final frame, but was unsuccessful as the Owls fell 25-18.
