Owls To Play Two Games This Week

The Owls kick off the new year against Saint Michael's on Jan. 4 at 7:30 p.m.

The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team will play two NE10 Conference games this week beginning on Wednesday, Jan 4 as they take on Saint Michael's College, followed by Stonehill College on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 3:30 p.m.

ALL-TIME VS. SAINT MICHAEL'S
The Purple Knights lead the all-time series versus the Owls, 13-19. 

THE LAST MEETING
GAME 1 - SCSU 101, STM 80 - Sophomore Joey Wallace (Rochester, N.Y.) led Southern Connecticut with 20 points (5-of-11 from 3-point range) nine rebounds and six assists. 
GAME 2 - SCSU 100, STM 79 - Senior Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) scored a game-high 22 points along with seven assists, three rebounds and three steals.

SCOUTING THE PURPLE KNIGHTS
  • Saint Michael's (1-10, 1-6 NE10) stand last in the Northeast Division. 
  • Senior Matt Bonds (21.1 ppg and 11.4 rpg) leads the team in scoring and ranks second in the NE10 in scoring.
  • Bonds leads the NE10 in rebounds per game. 
  • Saint Michael's (77.6 ppg) ranks ninth in the NE10 in scoring.
  • The Purple Knights (11.2 orpg) rank fourth in the NE10 in offensive rebounding per game. 

ALL-TIME VS. STONEHILL COLLEGE
Stonehill leads the all-time series versus the Owls, 25-35.

THE LAST MEETING
GAME 1 -
SCSU 94, STONEHILL 78 -  Michael Mallory scored 24 points along with seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

SCOUTING THE SKYHAWKS
  • Skyhawks (9-4, 4-3 NE10) stand in fourth place in the Northeast Division. 
  • Stonehill (81.1 ppg) rank fourth in the NE10 in scoring.
  • Freshman Daniel Largey (56.7) leads the NE10 in 3-point field goal percentage on 34-of-60 shooting.
  • The Skyhawks are led by senior Ryan Logan (17.8 ppg, 6.9 rpg and 3.5 apg).

CAREER GAME FOR MCLEOD
Sophomore Isaiah McLeod (Cambridge, Mass.) recorded his first career double-double tallying 23 points and 10 rebounds in a 78-65 win over Holy Family last week.

THE SOPHOMORES
Entering the week, Joey Wallace (11.8 ppg, 5.0 rpg and 4.8 apg) is fifth in the NE10 in assists and ranks third on the team in scoring. Isaiah McLeod is averaging 11.0 ppg and has scored over 10 points in nine of the Owls' 13 games this season.  

JERRY LUCKETT, JR. 
Junior Jerry Luckett, Jr. (Milwaukee, Wisc.) grabbed his fifth career double-double last week scoring 14 points along with 12 rebounds in a winning effort against Holy Family last week.

OWLS DEBUT
Senior Kayjuan Bynum (Springfield, Mass.) made his Owls debut where he registered four points and four rebounds (two offensive) in seven minutes of play against Holy Family last week. Bynum, who played four seasons on the Southern Connecticut State University football team, joined the men's basketball team on Dec. 28.

FIRST PLACE IN THE NE10
SCSU stands in first place in the Southwest Division with a conference record of 5-1.

MALLORY IN THE BOOKS 
Michael Mallory continues to make his mark in the SCSU record book:
• He became the all-time leader in field goal attempts with 1,594 at Pace on 12/7.
• He is now second in career field goals made with 730, which is five back of Michael Prim for first all-time.
• He is now seventh in school history with 130 career steals. 

MALLORY IN NCAA RANKINGS
Among
all three NCAA Divisions, Mallory also ranks:
  • 2nd in field goals made
  • 2nd in field goals attempted
  • 2nd in three-point field goals attempted
  • 6th in three-point field goals made
Among all active NCAA Division II players, Mallory ranks:

NCAA SCORING LEADERS
As of 1/2/17, Michael Mallory (22.5 ppg) ranks 16th in the country in scoring. Mallory also ranks third amongst active players from all three division in career points with 2,086 points.

MALLORY MOVING UP IN NE10 RECORD BOOKS
Michael Mallory is currently seventh all-time in NE10 scoring history with 2,088 points and counting. Mallory trails Elad Inbar (2,099) from UMass Lowell (2000-04) for sixth all-time.

MALLORY BECOMES OWLS ALL-TIME LEADER IN POINTS
After a 30-point performance against AIC, senior Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) passed Rich Radicioni as the program's all-time leading scorer with 1,938 career points and counting.

2K POINT CLUB
Thanks to his 20-point performance in a 68-66 win over Saint Rose, Michael Mallory reached the 2,000 point mark in his career.

AUSTIN CARTER CLOSING IN 
Senior Austin Carter (Bloomfield, Conn.) is two blocks shy in becoming second all-time in SCSU history in blocked shots, trailing Trevon Hamlet (188). Carter is also third amongst active Div. II players in career blocks with 186.

SCSU has been well-recognized in both the conference and national polls.

RECAPPING LAST YEAR
The Owls are coming off a year in which they went 22-8, finished first in the NE-10 Conference Southwest Division and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year. The Owls elevated as high as No. 2 in the national rankings last season.

A FINE FIRST SEASON
Owls' coach Scott Burrell was selected the 2016 ECAC Coach of the Year after leading the Owls to 22 wins and a NCAA berth in his first season. 

RETURNING STARTERS
Southern Connecticut will be led by senior Michael Mallory, who led the team with 23 points per game and was selected as an All-American, All-ECAC, All-Region and All-Northeast-10 Conference performer. Classmate Austin Carter averaged 9.8 points per game, 7.7 rebounds and 2.1 blocks and was named 2015-16 Northeast-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Sophomore Joey Wallace averaged 7.7 points per game and 4.2 rebounds and was named to the NE-10 All-Rookie Team. 

MALLORY CHOSEN TO PRESEASON "SUPER 16" TEAM
Michael Mallory has been selected to the Division II Bulletin's preseason "Super 16" Team. 

MALLORY NAMED SPORTING NEWS PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN
For the second year in a row, Michael Mallory was named to the Sporting News preseason All-America Team. 

SOME RECORDS OWNED 
Michael Mallory set a new SCSU single-season program record with 95 three-pointers made last year and is also currently the Owls' all-time leader in three-pointers made with 296 and three-point attempts with 774. He also holds Southern's single-game scoring record with 47 points in a January, 2016 win over Bentley.

CARTER DOES IT DEFENSIVELY
Austin Carter earned the 2015 NE10 Defensive Player of the Year Award.

HEAD OF THE PACK
Seniors Michael Mallory and Austin Carter will serve as team captains for the 2016-17 season. 

WELCOME TO THE CLUB
The Owls welcome juniors Jerry Luckett, Jr. and Bernard Brantley and freshmen Noah MireeDonte Etheridge and Taurus Adams II to the team this year.

TOUGH PLACE TO PLAY
Moore Field House has been a tough place to play for the Owls who are 40-10 (.800) at home since the start of the 2013-14 season. SCSU has been even better in NE10 action with a 33-3 mark (.916) in league games.

FACING SOME TOUGH COMPETITION
The Owls will face five teams that reached the NCAA Division II Tournament a year ago – Bentley, Holy Family, Southern New Hampshire, Stonehill and Saint Anselm.

RECENT SEASON-OPENING SUCCESS
The Owls have been victorious in their last six season-opening games dating back to the 2010-11 season, defeating Molloy, Goldey Beacom, Post, Chestnut Hill, Dominican and Dowling.

THRIVING IN THE CLASSROOM
For the second year in a row, the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team was recognized by the National Association of Basketball Coaches as a recipient of the 2015-16 Team Academic Excellence Award for its success in the classroom. In addition, five members of the team were selected as honorees for the 2016 NABC Honors Court - Michael BozzutoAustin CarterMichael MalloryJonathan Paul.
