A NEW YEAR
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team opens 2017 on the road as the Owls prepare for two crucial Northeast-10 Conference games at Saint Michael's College on Wednesday and Stonehill College on Saturday.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS VS. DOMINICAN
  • For the first time since the 2008-09 season, the women's basketball team outscored its opponent by 40+ points as the Owls defeated Dominican (N.Y.) College 79-36 in a non-conference showdown at Moore Field House.
  • Southern Connecticut set a new season-high in three-point field goals with 19 and in three-point field goal attempts with 38.
  • The Owls held Chargers without field goal for final 13:58 of the game, the fewest points allowed in 16-17.
  • Twelve different players registered at least two points in the Owls win.
  • Held opponent to only shooting 25.0% (13-52) from the floor.
  • Made 19 three-point baskets.

ALL-TIME VS. SAINT MICHAEL'S
Southern Connecticut leads Saint Michael's College in the all-time series 17-8.

LAST YEAR VS. SAINT MICHAEL'S
  • Southern Connecticut defeated Saint Michael's College by the score of 87-82.
  • Maria Weselyj came off the bench scoring 24 of the Owls' 43 bench points to go along with three rebounds, two steals and two assists.
  • Former Owl Jackie Beathea collected her eighth double-double of the year, 13 points and 15 rebounds.
  • The Owls outscored the Purple Knight in the paint 36-30 as well as held an edge in points off turnovers, 20-10, second chance points, 16-7, and fast break points, 8-4.

ALL-TIME VS. STONEHILL
Stonehill holds a 13-11 edge over Southern Connecticut in the all-time series.

LAST YEAR VS. STONEHILL
  • Southern Connecticut defeated Stonehill College by the score of 72-69.
  • At the 8:30 mark, Stonehill brought the score to within one, 53-52, but the Owls pushed their lead back up to five, 57-52, after two free throws from Maria Weselyj.
  • Stonehill threatened the Owls again at the 2:37 mark after a three from Paige Marshall, but the Owls would go on to win it by three, 72-69.
  • Former Owl Danielle Powell had a stellar afternoon scoring 20 points while Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) recorded a double-double, 16 points and 15 rebounds.

NOTABLE STATS FROM DOMINICAN
HURLBERT NAMED SCSU FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
For the second time this season, Abby Hurlbert, of the SCSU women's basketball team was named SCSU Female Athlete of the Week after her performance last week. Hurlbert assembled a strong stat line of 15 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals in Southern's 79-36 win over Dominican. She knocked down 5-of-10 shots from the floor, including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc.

OWLS IN THE NE10
Taylor McLaughlin ranks:
    - second in points per game (21.6).
    - fourth in rebounds per game along with Kaila Duarte of Saint Anselm (9.8 rpg).
    - second in three-point percentage (48.1%).
Murphy Murad ranks:
    - sixth in assists per game with 3.5.
Abby Hurlbert ranks:
    - eighth in steals with 1.7.

MCLAUGHLIN JOINS 1,000 POINT CLUB
In the loss to American International, Taylor McLaughlin joined the 1,000 point club after tying her career-high 29 points. She is now 17th in the all-time record book in career-points with 1,141.

NEW ARRIVALS
The Owls welcome six newcomers to the squad for the 2016-17 season - Imani Wheeler, Kiana Steinauer, Alyssa Irons, Bridget Sharnick, Maddie Brown and Jessica Fressle.

WELCOME BACK
Southern Connecticut returns 11 players from last year's squad – seniors Taylor McLaughlin and Maria Weselyj, juniors Murphy Murad, Chandler Williams, Abby Hurlbert, Paige Decker, Chloe Brinton and sophomores  Jana Migliaro, Amanda Pfohl, Allie Smith and Erin Ryder.

THE CAPTAINS
Southern Connecticut State University head women's basketball coach Kate Lynch has announced that seniors Taylor McLaughlin and  Maria Weselyj and redshirt junior Murphy Murad will serve as team tri-captains for the 2016-17 campaign.

OWLS TABBED TO FINISH FOURTH IN NE-10 PRESEASON POLL
The women's basketball team has been selected to finish fourth, along with division rival Le Moyne College, in the Southwest Division according to the Northeast-10 Conference Preseason poll, as voted on by the league's coaches. The Owls and the Dolphins both received a total of 47 points, while the Owls managed to get a first place vote.

LOOKING BACK AT LAST SEASON
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team with a winning record of 19-11 as well as qualified for the Northeast-10 Conference Championship for the third straight year. SCSU reached the semifinals before losing on the road to the eventual champion, Bentley.

HIT A CHAMPIONSHIP SHOT...MEET A SUPERSTAR
Prior to coming to SCSU, Maria Weselyj connected for the game-winning shot in the 2013 CIAC Class LL state championship while competing for Mercy High School. The shot gained national and international acclaim, and earlier this fall was included in Brad Paisley's video entitled "Today". Weselyj eventually met Paisley after the release of the video while he was on tour in Connecticut.

LYNCH MAKING AN IMPACT
Kate Lynch '08 begins her second season as head coach for the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team. Entering the year, Lynch had compiled a 100-76 overall record as a head coach. Lynch remains the all-time leading scorer in Owls' history (1,779 points) and ranks seventh all-time in rebounds (650). Following the 2015-16 season, she was selected by the WBCA as one of its "Thirty Under 30" honorees.

TOUGH COMPETITION AWAITS
The Owls will face four teams in 2016-17 that made the NCAA Tournament a year ago - Queens, Bentley, Saint Anselm and American International.

BEATHEA, POWELL EARN CONFERENCE HONORS
Jackie Beathea and Danielle Powell earned Northeast-10 Conference regular season honors for their play in 2015-16. Beathea was named to the First-Team while Powell was named to the Third-Team.

TRIO RANKS AMONGST SCSU CAREER LEADERS
Jackie Beathea, Nicole Grossbard and Danielle Powell made their mark on the SCSU women's basketball record book. Here's a look at where they finished their collegiate careers:

• first in rebounds with 1216.
• first in highest rebounding average with 11.2.
• second in free throw attempts with 595.
• fourth in field goals made with 573.
• fourth in free throws made with 348.
• seventh in total points with 1,494.
Danielle Powell
• 15th in rebounds with 594.
• second in blocks with 117.
Nicole Grossbard
• third in total assists with 457.

EXCELLING IN THE CLASSROOM
Southern Connecticut had 11 student-athletes selected to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for their work in the classroom during the 2015-16 academic year.

FIVE OWLS HONORED BY D2ADA
Chloe Brinton, Paige Decker, Abigail Hurlbert, Elizabeth McKinley and Taylor McLaughlin were all named as 2016 recipients of the Division II Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award for their work in the classroom.

2007 NCAA CHAMPS TO BE HONORED TWICE
Since the conclusion of the 2015-16 season, the national champion 2007 NCAA women's basketball team has been recognized with a pair of honors. The Owls were selected for induction as part of the Northeast-10 Conference Hall of Fame's Class of 2016. In addition, the team was also selected for induction into the SCSU Athletic Hall of Fame and will be formally honored in May, 2017.
