EASTON, Mass. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell on the road to Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference showdown, 67-55, on Saturday afternoon at Merkert Gymnasium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was an evenly matched first quarter as the Skyhawks led the Owls by three, 15-12 entering the final 10 minutes of the half.
Senior
Maria Weselyj (Marlborough, Conn.) started off the second quarter bringing the Owls within to one, 15-14, after made layup just thirty seconds in. However, Stonehill slowly began building back up its lead and would hold a 37-19 lead at the half.
Southern Connecticut took over in the third quarter after battling back to within nine, 44-35, following a 16-7 run by the Owls. But, Southern Connecticut found themselves trailing by double-digits, 54-40, heading into the final quarter.
However, in the fourth quarter the closet the Owls got to within the Skyhawks was at the 1:05 mark as back-to-back free throws from
Kiana Steinauer (Oakville, Ontario) brought the Owls to within 10, 65-55.
FIRST HALF STATS
- The Skyhawks' offense outshot the Owls in the second quarter 22-7.
- Stonehill closed out the first half with a 22-5 run.
- Freshman Kiana Steinauer (Oakville, Ontario) score five of the Owls' seven points in the second while four different Owls scored at least two points in the first.
SECOND HALF STATS
- Southern Connecticut outshot Stonehill 21-17 in the third as well as in the fourth 15-13.
- McLaughlin scored 13 of her 22 points in the third quarter.
- The Owls had a big third quarter as the visitors outscored the hosts in points off turnovers with six and held a 10-4 edge in points in the paint.
FINAL STATS
- Senior Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) registered a team high 22 points while Weselyj collected 14 in the Owls' loss.
- McLaughlin also picked up her ninth double-double of the year.
- Southern Connecticut held a 22-14 edge in points in the paint and 4-0 edge in fast break points.
