Owls Continue NE10 Play With Two Games This Week

Owls will host two NE10 games this week beginning on Tuesday, Jan. 10 against Merrimack College.

The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team will play two NE10 Conference games this week beginning on Tuesday, Jan 10 as they take on Merrimack College, followed by Saint Anselm College on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 3:30 p.m.
 
ALL-TIME VS. MERRIMACK
Merrimack leads the all-time series versus the Owls, 19-13.

THE LAST MEETING
1/12/16 - SCSU 80, Merrimack 77 - Senior Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) posted 26 points in 37 minutes of play.
 
SCOUTING THE WARRIORS
•Merrimack (12-3, 7-2 NE10) stands second in the Northeast Division.
•Sophomore Ryan Boutler (16.6 ppg and 3.9 rpg) leads the team in scoring, followed by freshman Juvaris Hayes (15.5 ppg and 6.9 rpg).
•Merrimack (79.8 ppg) ranks fifth in the NE10 in scoring and points allowed (74.9 ppg)
 
ALL-TIME VS. SAINT ANSELM
Saint Anselm leads the all-time series versus the Owls, 23-14.

THE LAST MEETING
 1/16/16 - SCSU 99, STA 94 - Sophomore Isaiah McLeod (Cambridge, Mass.) scored 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting (4-of-4 from 3-point range). 

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
•Saint Anselm (6-5, 4-5 NE10) stands in fourth place in the Northeast Division.
•The Hawks (85.9 ppg) rank second in the NE10 in scoring and points allowed (77.3 ppg).
•Sophomore Tim Guers (18.7 ppg and 6.1 rpg) leads the team in scoring.
 
CONTROLLING THE PAINT
Junior Jerry Luckett, Jr. (Milwaukee, Wisc.) is averaging 15.4 ppg and 7.5 rpg and has a team-high five double-doubles on the year.
 
FIRST PLACE IN THE NE10
The Owls rank first in the Southwest Division with a 7-1 conference record.

Individual averages through 15 games:  
THE SOPHOMORES
Entering the week, Joey Wallace (11.6 ppg and 5.0 apg) is fifth in the NE10 in assists and ranks third on the team in scoring. Isaiah McLeod (10.7 ppg and 4.1 rpg) has posted double digit scoring efforts in 10 of the Owls' 15 games this season. 

CAREER GAME FOR MCLEOD
Isaiah McLeod  recorded his first career double-double tallying 23 points and 10 rebounds in a 78-65 win over Holy Family.

SPALDING NE10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Michael Mallory has been named Spalding NE10 Player of the Week for the second time this season, following his performances last week against Saint Michael's College and Stonehill College. (Full Release) 

LAST TWO GAMES
Michael Mallory scored a season-high 40 points in a come from behind win against Saint Michael's, knocking down eight three-point shots. In game two of the week, Mallory would score 21 of his game-high 24 points, as the Owls overcame a 17-point deficit to defeat Stonehill College and improve its record to 11-4, 7-1 NE10 on the year.
MALLORY IN THE RECORD BOOKS
After his 40-point performance against Saint Michael's, Mallory passed Mario Elie (1981-85) from AIC for fourth all-time in NE10 scoring with 2,125 points. Mallory also became the Owls all-time leader in field goals made (736) passing Michael Prim. The senior has a total of three career 40-point games.
 
MALLORY IN THE NCAA RANKINGS
Among all three active NCAA Divisions:

  • 2nd in field goals attempted (1,696)

MALLORY TAKES FIRST PLACE ALL-TIME
After a 30-point performance in a 92-87 victory over AIC, Michael Mallory passed Rich Radicioni as the program's all-time leading scorer with 1,938 career points and counting.
 
2K POINT CLUB
Thanks to his 20-point performance in a 68-66 win over Saint Rose, Michael Mallory reached the 2,000th point mark in his career.
 
IN THE NE10 RANKINGS
Entering the week, the Owls rank:
  • 1st: Rebounds (39.3 rpg)
  • 1st: Offensive rebounding (12.7 orpg)
  • 3rd: Blocks (3.7 bpg)
  • 9th: Points (78.9 ppg) 

CARTER CLOSING IN 
Senior Austin Carter (187) is two blocks shy in becoming second all-time in blocked shots, trailing Trevon Hamlet (188). Carter is also third amongst active Div. II players in career blocks. Carter was  named the 2015-16 NE10 Defensive Player of the Year.

RECAPPING LAST YEAR
The Owls are coming off a year in which they went 22-8, finished first in the NE-10 Conference Southwest Division and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year. The Owls elevated as high as No. 2 in the national rankings last season.
 
A FINE FIRST SEASON
Owls' coach Scott Burrell was selected the 2016 ECAC Coach of the Year after leading the Owls to 22 wins and a NCAA berth in his first season. 
 
RETURNING STARTERS
Southern Connecticut will be led by senior Michael Mallory, who led the team with 23 points per game and was selected as an All-American, All-ECAC, All-Region and All NE10 Conference performer. Classmate Austin Carter averaged 9.8 points per game, 7.7 rebounds and 2.1 blocks and was named 2015-16 NE10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Sophomore Joey Wallace averaged 7.7 points per game and 4.2 rebounds and was named to the NE10 All-Rookie Team. 
 
MALLORY CHOSEN TO PRESEASON "SUPER 16" TEAM
Michael Mallory has been selected to the Division II Bulletin's preseason "Super 16" Team.
 
MALLORY NAMED SPORTING NEWS PRESEASON ALL AMERICAN
For the second year in a row, Michael Mallory was named to the Sporting News preseason All-American Team. 
 
WELCOME TO THE CLUB
The Owls welcome senior Kayjuan Bynum, juniors Jerry Luckett, Jr. and Bernard Brantley and freshmen Noah Miree, Donte Etheridge and Taurus Adams II to the team this year.
 
WELCOME BACK
Southern Connecticut returns eight players from last year's squad - seniors Michael Bozzuto, Austin Carter, Michael Mallory, Dominic Migliaro, Jonathan Paul and sophomores  Toby Christensen, Isaiah McLeod and Joey Wallace.
 
TOUGH PLACE TO PLAY
The Owls are 39-10 (.795) at home since the start of the 2013-14 season and 35-3 in NE10 play (.945) in league games.
 
SOME SCSU RECORDS OWNED
Heading into the year, Michael Mallory held the single-season record with 95 three-pointers made last year. Mallory ranks first all-time in 3-point field goals made (260) and  attempts (670). Mallory also recorded a career-high 47 points in a win against Bentley on Jan. 30, 2016
 
THRIVING IN THE CLASSROOM
For the second year in a row, the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team was recognized by the National Association of Basketball Coaches as a recipient of the 2015-16 Team Academic Excellence Award for its success in the classroom. In addition, five members of the team were selected as honorees for the 2016 NABC Honors Court - Michael Bozzuto, Austin Carter, Michael Mallory, Jonathan Paul.
