BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – A 14-3 run over the final 2:18 sent the University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team past Southern Connecticut State University for a 77-71 win in the season opener for both teams today.

Africa Williams (New York, N.Y.) led the Owls with 16 points in her SCSU debut.
Abby Hurlbert (Thomaston, Conn.) and
Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) also reached double figures with 10 points apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- UDC jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but SCSU responded to outscore the Firebirds by a 19-11 margin over the remainder of the frame to build a 19-16 lead after one quarter.
- Aside from one tie, the Owls never trailed in the second quarter. In fact, they led by as many as seven before taking a five-point lead into the locker room at the half.
- The SCSU stretched to as many as 10, 45-35, midway through the third quarter. UDC closed the frame on a 15-5 run to even the score after 30 minutes.
- Southern regained the lead in the final frame and built a 68-63 lead after two free throws from Wheeler with 2:18 left. UDC scored the next 12 points until
Chandler Williams (Chepachet, R.I.) connected on a three-pointer in the closing seconds. The Firebirds then knocked down two free throws to seal up the win.
UP NEXT: The Owls are back in action tomorrow for a road game at Bridgeport, with tip set for 4 p.m.
