Entering this afternoon's matchup, Pace was undefeated in conference play and held onto first place in the Southwest Division with a 5-0 record after the Owls fell to American International College on Wednesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Owls caught fire early as they came out of the gates with a 14-2 run in the first five minutes of the game to give them a 12 point lead. Hurlbert opened the scoring with a good three-point shot assisted by Murad to ignite the Owls offense.
- Pace would respond with a 14-3 run of their own to tie the game at 19 midway through the second quarter to keep within reach of the Owls.
Africa Williams scored 11 of her 16 points in the first half to keep the Owls offense rolling.
- The Setters went on a 9-3 run in the third quarter to gain the lead over the Owls for the first time at the conclusion of a quarter. In an unusual string of events, with 32 seconds remaining in the third frame,
Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) made a sensational spinning layup off of a pass from
Jessica Fressle (Levittown, N.Y) to tie the game. Seven seconds later,
Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) intercepted a Pace pass from the base line and made a layup of her own to give the Owls a one point lead. The Setters would then regain the lead by one to end the third quarter.
- In the fourth quarter the Owls pulled out all the stops. They found their groove from the first quarter and started the fourth frame with a 14-3 run in the first five minutes to increase their lead to 10 points. This lead would prove to be too much for the Setters as the Owls would go on to win 61-58.
The Owls advance to a 5-1 record in the NE10 and move into first place in the conference as they now hold the head-to-head tie breaker with this win over Pace.
