NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Saint Rose's Tyler Sayre hit the game-winning jumper with 1.7 seconds remaining to give the visitors a 72-70 win over the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon.
TEAM RECORDS: Southern Connecticut (16-9, 12-5 NE10) | St. Rose (21-6, 13-5 NE10)
Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) posted a game-high 20 points and a team-high four assists.
Isaiah McLeod (Cambridge, Mass.) added 19 points, including five three-pointers.
Jerry Luckett, Jr. (Milwaukee, Wisc.) also reached double figures with 12 points and added seven rebounds.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
OWLS MAKE A LATE SURGE: Trailing 69-62 with 3:49 to go, the Owls scored eight of the next nine points to tie the game at 70. Mallory had five points during that run, including a pair of free throws to even the game with just under 30 seconds left.
A BIG SHOT: The Golden Knights took the game clock almost down to the buzzer, but Sayre's contested jumper went through the net with under two seconds to go. The Owls had one last shot, but McLeod's bid from just inside half court hit the front of the rim at the buzzer.
A QUICK START: St. Rose scored the first 10 points of the game and led for the entire first half. The Owls closed to within a hoop on multiple occasions before the Golden Knights built a 39-27 lead late in the frame. Southern closed the half with three-pointers from Carter and McLeod to close within 39-33 at the break.
MAKING A RUN: SCSU took its first lead of the game at 40-39 and used a 15-0 run over both halves for its first advantage. St. Rose went back in front but the Owls hung around. A McLeod jumper gave SCSU its final lead of the game at 58-57 with just over nine minutes to go and St. Rose went back ahead and didn't trail again.
