NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team won its home opener against Mercy in a 1-0 victory on Thursday night.

FIRST HALF
Neither team scored in what turned out to be an eventful first half. Both team tallied up the shots, the Owls had six compared to the Mavericks five. Senior Louis Greenway Tambini (Nottingham, England) led the Owls as he had two shots on target in the first half.
SECOND HALF
The Owls would score the first goal of the game in the 59th minute off the right foot of Tambini. Senior Ignacio Navarro (Norwalk, Conn.) floated the ball in to the box where Tambini controlled the ball with his chest then slotted the ball past the Mercy goalie to give the Owls the 1-0 lead. Both teams shot the ball well forcing a total of 11 saves by both goalkeepers. The Owls would hold off the Mavericks late surge for a 1-0 win.
Senior Noah Varonier (Miller Place, N.Y.) recorded his first clean sheet of the year as he tallied four saves to preserve the Owls win.
UP NEXT: The Owls go on the road Sept. 7 to face the University of Bridgeport, with the game set to start at 7 p.m.
