Men's Indoor Track & Field Claims 2018 Elm City Classic

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut Men's Indoor Track & Field team rolled to a decisive win at the 2018 Elm City Classic with a score of 225 to lead St. Thomas Aquinas with 108 points, Franklin Pierce with 99, Post at 65 and New Haven with 3.

The Owls accounted for wins almost every event on the day, highlighted by Philip Quaye's (Manchester, Conn.) Heptathlon win after capturing the 55 Meter Hurdles and Pole Vault events. Quaye also swept the four Heptathlon events on Friday. Turner Kelly (Amityville, N.Y.) won the Weight Throw and Shot Put events. In the running events, Nik Strikland (Uncasville, Conn.) won the 400 Meter Dash and also ran anchor on the 4x400 Meter winning relay team. Elijah Henry (Stratford, Conn.) also won the 200 Meter Dash.

Heptathlon (Continued from Friday, Dec. 7)

Philip Quaye (Manchester, Conn.) won the overall Heptathlon event, posting 4,802 points in the five-athlete field. On Saturday, Quaye won the 55 Meter Hurdles with a time of 8.19 before finishing tied for first in the Pole Vault at 13'3 ½".
Joshue Prouty (Ellington, Conn.) tied Quaye in the Pole Vault event and finished second in the 1,000 Meter Run with a time of 2:52.29 and second in the 55 Meter Hurdles at 8.63.
Dan Brown (Lebanon, Conn.) took the 1,000 Meter at 2:51.92 and finished third in the 55 Meter Hurdles at 8.84.
Prouty finished second behind Quaye with 4,479 points, followed by Brown at 4,436 and Hunter Stokes (Madison, Conn.) at 4,151.

Triple Jump

Oghenefejiro Onakpoma (Naugatuck, Conn.) won the Triple Jump event with a distance of 48'6 ¾".

Weight Throw

Fielding 10 of the 12 competitors in the event, the Owls grabbed the top nine spots in the Weight Throw.
Turner Kelly (Amityville, N.Y.) won at 56'3", followed by Trajan Lounsbury (Seymour, Conn.) at 55' 8 ½", Kade Amster (Moosup, Conn.) at 50' 11 ½" and Jordan Foster (Bridgeport, Conn.) at 49' 5".

Shot Put

Turner Kelly also turned in a distance of 53' 4 ½" to win the Shot Put followed Amster (46' 8 ¼"), Lounsbury (45'10") before Bernardo Mbaya (Waterbury, Conn.) rounded out the top five with a throw of 42' 9 ¾".

400 Meter Dash

The Owls dominated the scoring in the 400 Meter Dash, led by Nik Strickland's (Uncasville, Conn.) 50.70, followed by Aren Seeger (Naugatuck, Conn.) at 50.83, Justin Kelly (Hartford, Conn.) at 51.17, Jordan Lembo-Frey (Guilford, Conn.) at 51.47, Trinity Collins (Middletown, Conn.) at 51.66 and Naji Middletown (West Hartford, Conn.) at 51.74 to round out the scoring.

800 Meter Dash

Troy Stegman (Wethersfield, Conn.) was the Owls' top finisher in the 800 Meter Dash, picking up a point with a time of 2:03.74 for sixth place.

200 Meter Dash

Southern captured four of the top five spots in the 200 Meter Dash, led by Elijah Henry's (Stratford, Conn.) first-place finish with a time of 22.16.
Milan Spisek (Easton, Conn.) finished third with a time of 22.82, followed by Isaiah Brooks (East Hartford, Conn.) in fourth place at 22.99 and Justin Kelly (Hartford, Conn.) in fifth at 23.00.

4x400 Meter Relay

The Owls won the 4x400 Meter Relay with a time of 3:25.00. Led by Jalen Johnson () in the 1^st leg with a time of 50.57, followed by Collins at 52.04, Middleton at 51.33 and Strickland in the anchor spot with a time of 51.33.
