Men's Swimming and Diving Falls To TCNJ, 169-124

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut men's swimming and driving fell to The College of New Jersey, 169-124, in a matchup at the Hutchinson Natatorium. Following the event, SCSU honored Tyler Castellone, Drew Dantino, Greg Rodriguez and Tyler Steskla as part of Senior Day recognition.

Leo LaPorte (Washingtonville, N.Y.,) captured a pair of wins in the 100 and 200 yard butterfly events while Max Padro (West Haven, Conn.) won the 200 yard IM and was also on the winning 20 yard medley relay time, while also finished third in the 100 and 20 yard freestyle events. Drew Dantino (Waterbury, Conn.) posted a win in the 100 yard breaststroke and Matthew Widlar (Middlebury, Conn.) won the 200 breaststroke and finished third in the 100 yard breaststroke.

200 Yard Medley Relay
1650 Yard Freestyle
  • Tyler Steskla (Cheshire, Conn.) finished second with a time of 16:59.09, while Dominica Papiro (Southbury, Conn.) was fourth with a time of 17:44.87 and Michael Mendonca (Madison, Conn.) was fifth with a time of 18:00.69.

200 Yard Freestyle
  • The Owls took three of the top five spots in the 200 yard freestyle, led by Prado third place finish at 1:46.63.
  • Graeden Sartoris (South Windsor, Conn.) was fourth at 1:47.86 and Even Bombery (Naugatuck, Conn.) was fifth at 1:49.22.

100 Yard Backstroke
  • Castellone scored again for the Owls with a fourth place finish in the 100 yard backstroke at 54.61 while John Gaudio (Cheshire, Conn.) finished fifth with a 58.56.

100 Yard Breaststroke
  • The Owls dominated the 100 yard breaststroke, led by Dantino in first place with a 1:00.97.
  • Peters slotted in behind him in second place at 1:02.42 while Widlar was third at 1:02.61.

200 Yard Butterfly
  • LaPorte won the 200 yard butterfly event with a time of 1:52.44, while Scott Moore (Glastonbury, Conn.) finished third at 2:03.52.

50 Yard Freestyle
  • Rodriguez and Peters both collected points for the Owls as Rodriguez finished third with a time of 22.21 and Peters checked-in in sixth at 22.56.

100 Yard Freestyle
  • Padro finished third with a time of 48.69 followed by Laporte in fourth at 48.77 and Tyler Cusano (Hamden, Conn.) in fifth with a time of 50.02.

200 Yard Backstroke
  • Gaudio was third with a time of 2:02.01.

200 Yard Breaststroke
  • Widlar captured the 200 yard breaststroke event with a time of 2:14.80 – three seconds faster than teammate Bryce Castellone (South Windsor, Conn.) in second place. Papiro finished fourth in the event at 2:22.36.

500 Yard Freestyle
  • The Owls took two of the top three spots in the 500 yard freestyle event as Bombery finished second with a time of 5:41.30 and Cusano touched at 4:57.95.

100 Yard Butterfly
  • Laporte won the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 50.52 while Bryce Castellone was third at 55.47.

200 Yard IM
  • Padro won the 200 yard IM with a time of 1:59.25, finishing ahead of TCNH's Griffin Morgan at 1:59.35.
  • Peters logged a 2:01.48 while Bryce Castellone was fourth at 2:02.89.

400 Yard Freestyle Relay
  • In the final event of the evening, the team of Laporte, Cusano, Rodriguez and Sartoris was second with a time of 3:18.59.
  • Bombery, Zachary Fell (Seymour, Conn.), Scott Moore and Dantino were second with a time of 3:25.95.

Southern Connecticut is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019 when it travels to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to take on Marist at 1 p.m.
