Balanced Attack Leads Men's Basketball Past Merrimack, 80-71

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A balanced attack led the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team past Merrimack College, 80-71. The Owls improve to 10-5 overall and 5-2 in the NE10, while the Warriors drop to 9-6 overall and 4-4 in the NE10.

Isaiah McLeod (Cambridge, Mass.) led the Owls with 29 points, shooting 7-of-16 from the floor and 5-of-9 from three-point territory along with seven rebounds. Luke Beesley (Champaign, Ill.) recorded his eighth double-double of the season, registering 14 rebounds and 13 points shooting 4-of-10 from the floor. Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) tallied 13 points, eight rebounds and two steals, shooting 6-fo-13 from the field. Kealen Ives (Providence, R.I.) added 10 points and six assists shooting 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.

    HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A three-pointer from C.J. Seaforth (Hamden, Conn.) ignited a 23-5 run in the first six minutes of play to give the Owls an 18-point cushion. Southern kept a ten-point lead for the rest of the half, however the Warriors were able to cut down the Owls 16-point lead down to ten points at the half, 42-32.
  • Merrimack continued their momentum from the first half to come within five points of the Owls, 42-37. Southern answered with an 11-2 run to extend their lead to 16 at the 14:33 mark, 55-39. Merrimack came within two possessions with two minutes remaining, but good defense from the Owls held off the Warriors late surge to seal the 80-71 victory at Moore Field House.              

    NOTABLE FACTS
  • With his 29 points against the Warriors, McLeod now stands at 1,460 on the Owls all-time points list and now trails Paul "Topsy" DelGobbo 57' for 10th place with 1,507.
  • McLeod now jumped to first in the conference in points averaging 22.3 points per game.
  • Beesley collected his eighth double-double of the year, leading the conference with 10.1 rebounds per game.
  • This is the 11th time this season that four or more players have hit double-digit points.
  • The Owls shot 56.3 percent from three-point range going 9-for-16 and 42.9 percent from the floor hitting 27-of-63.
  • This is the Owls eighth-straight victory. The last time Southern won eight-straight was from Jan. 24, 2015 to Feb. 21, 2015.
