Men's Soccer Ties No. 1 Adelphi, 1-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team tied nationally-ranked No. 1 Adelphi 1-1 in a double-overtime thriller at Jess Dow Field in New Haven, Conn. The Owls go to 2-2-4 overall and 1-2-2 in Northeast 10 play while Adelphi goes to 7-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in conference play.

Daniel Utgaard (Kristiansand, Norway) scored the Owls only goal in the 86th minute of play to break a 0-0 tie. In goal, Andrey Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil) stopped six of the Panthers' seven shots on goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams played to a scoreless late in the game before Kevin Van der Pol sent a perfect cross pass from in front of the Owls' bench that bounced through the box. Utgaard slid behind the defense and redirected the ball off the cross bar and in to give the Owls a 1-0 lead in the 86th minute of play against the top-ranked team in the country.
  • Three minutes later, Adelphi's Tommy Speed's throw-in found the foot of Giancarlo Vacca who attempted a cross through the box. Pier Paolo Navarro headed the ball behind the Owls' defenser where Taylor Kaczynski took the pass and booted the ball to the opposite post to send the game to overtime.

NOTES
  • Utgaard is now tied with Francisco Roldan Martin with a team-leading three goals. The marker was also his fifth career goal.
  • The Owls are now 2-1-2 in five games at Jess Dow Field all-time against Adelphi, with the Panthers last win on the Owls turf coming in 2015.
