Men's Basketball Cruises Past Concordia, 110-77, In Home Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. –  The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team defeated Concordia College in their home opener, 110-77, in a non-conference matchup at James Moore Field House in New Haven, Conn.
 
Five Owls scored in double figures for the second consecutive game, led by junior C.J. Seaforth (Hamden, Conn.), who had a game-high 24 points on 8-11 shooting while making six three-pointers. Freshman Lyron Bennett (Boston, Mass.) scored 20 points while dishing out five assists, while senior Taurus Adams II (Milwaukee, Wisc.) had a double-double for the second consecutive game, finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Redshirt junior Isaiah Boissard (Walden, N.Y.) finished with 11 points and went a perfect 4-4 from the field. Junior Khalil Richard (Baltimore, Md.) also scored 11 points and junior Greg Jones (Bronx, N.Y.) corralled 10 rebounds.

How It Happened
  • The Owls got off to a fast start, taking a 17-6 lead during the first four minutes of the first half.
  • Concordia responded by cutting the lead to 21-18, but Southern went on a 20-3 run to extend their lead to 41-22 with 4:24 left. Southern would take a 49-41 lead into halftime. 
  • Southern began the second half on a 16-6 run to extend their lead to 65-47. 
  • With the Owls up 81-63 with 7:25 remaining, Southern went on a 24-8 run to take a 105-71 lead, before securing a 110-77 victory.


Notes
  • Southern went a perfect 16-16 from the free throw line, the third most free throws made in a game without a miss in program history. 
  • It was just the fifth game in program history the Owls shot 100 percent from the free throw line (min. 12 attempts). It also occurred on this season against Goldey-Beacom on Nov. 10, Jan. 26, 2019 against Bentley, March 14, 2015 against Bridgeport, and Nov. 25, 2014 against Pace. 
  • Southern scored 110 points in a game at James Moore Field House for the first time since Jan. 15, 2015 against Saint Anselm, a 120-100 victory.
  • Southern scored 61 points in the second half, their most points scored in any half of a game since Nov. 12, 2016 against Holy Family when they scored 63 in the second half during a 105-103 win.
  • The Owls scored 110 points in a game for the first time since Jan. 2, 2019, when they defeated LIU Post 112-57.
  • Bennett's 20 points were the most scored by a Southern freshman in a game since Ulyen Coleman(Brockton, Mass.) scored 29 against New Haven on Jan. 31, 2018. 
  • Seaforth scored at least 20 points in a game for the third time this season.
  • Adams II recorded his sixth career double-double and his third of the season.
  • The Owls' 14 three-pointers made were a season-high, and their most in a game since making 15 against Franklin Pierce on Jan. 13, 2019.
  • Southern grabbed a season-high 46 rebounds, their most in a game since Jan, 9, 2019 against Merrimack.
  • Southern also shot a season-high in field goal percentage (57.7) and three-point percentage (53.8).
