Men's Basketball Falls To American International College, 82-76, In Conference Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. –  The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team fell to American International College in their conference opener, 82-76, at James Moore Field House. The Owls fall to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the Northeast 10, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the NE10. 
 
Four Owls scored in double figures, led by junior C.J. Seaforth (Hamden, Conn.), who had team-high 19 points and went 5-for-10 from three-point range. Freshman Lyron Bennett (Boston, Mass.) scored 16 points and shot 7-for-11 from the field and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. Junior Greg Jones (Bronx, N.Y.) added 13 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and redshirt junior Isaiah Boissard (Walden, N.Y.) shot 4-for-6 from the field and 2-for-3 from three-point range. 

How It Happened
  • The first half was a back-and-forth scoring affair that featured eight ties and 11 lead changes. 
  • Southern held a 17-14 lead with 14:01 remaining in the first half, but the Yellow Jackets went on a 12-4 run to take a 26-21 lead with 9:00 remaining.
  • Southern took their biggest lead of the first half, 39-30, but AIC was able tie the game at 41 heading into the break.
  • The Owls opened up the second half on a 22-14 run to take a 63-55 lead with 12:09 remaining in the game. 
  • The Yellow Jackets were able to cut the Southern lead to 65-61, but Southern scored seven straight points on back-to-back layups by Boissard and a three-pointer by Lyron Bennett to take a 72-61 lead with 7:08 left in the second half, their largest lead of the game.
  • The Yellow Jackets went on a 21-4 run to end the game and secure their 82-76 victory.



Notes
  • C.J. Seaforth has made at least five three's in two-consecutive games. 
  • Bennett made seven field goals in the contest for the second consecutive game, and has shot 14-for-26 (53.8 percent) from the field over the last two games. 
  • The Owls have shot 26-for-50 (52 percent) from beyond the arc over the last two games.
  • Southern has made 24 of their last 25 free throw attempts dating back to their game on Nov. 23 against Concordia.
