Men's Basketball Comes Back To Defeat New Haven, 74-71

WEST HAVEN, Conn. –  The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team defeated the University of New Haven, 74-71, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at Charger Gymnasium, coming back from down 10 points twice to win by three. The Owls improve to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the Northeast 10, while the Chargers fall to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the NE10. 
 
Senior Taurus Adams II (Milwaukee, Wisc.) had a team-high 25 points and 11 rebounds, while shooting 9-for-14 from the field. Junior C.J. Seaforth (Hamden, Conn.) had 18 points and made four three-pointers, while junior Greg Jones (Bronx, N.Y.) had 12 points and nine rebounds, junior Khalil Richard (Baltimore, Md.) chipped in 10 points, and freshman Lyron Bennett (Boston, Mass.) finished with nine points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
 
How It Happened
  • New Haven jumped out to a 10-0 lead before Southern counterattacked with a 17-7 run to tie the game at 17-17 with 10:36 remaining in the first half. 
  • New Haven went on a 14-2 run and took a 31-19 lead, their largest of the game with 6:36 left.  Southern responded with a 13-7 run to end the half, cutting the Chargers lead to 38-32. Bennett scored seven points during the run. 
  • Both teams went back-and-forth to begin the second half, with New Haven maintaining their six-point lead.  Southern would go on a 16-6 run and took their first lead of the game stretching it to 52-48 with 11:13 remaining. Adams II scored eight points, while Seaforth scored six points and Jones made two free throws during the stretch.
  • After New Haven took a 53-52 lead, Southern went on a 15-9 run taking their largest lead of the game, 67-62, with 1:56 remaining. The Owls ended the game going 7-for-8 from the free throw line and secured a 74-71 win at Charger Gymnasium. 


Notes
  • Adams II recorded his seventh career double-double and his fourth of the season. 
  • Jones grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds. 
  • Southern came back from down 10 points in the first half twice, the second time this season the Owls have come back from a double-digit deficit and won (Nov. 10 against Goldey-Beacom).
  • Southern set a new season-high in free throws made and attemped, going 20-for-22 from the line/
  • Southern has made 44 of their last 47 free throw attempts dating back to their game on Nov. 23 against Concordia.
