Men's Basketball Knocks Off University Of The Sciences, 80-52

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team defeated University of the Sciences, 80-52, in a non-conference showdown at James Moore Field House. The Owls improve to 6-4, while the Devils fall to 2-7. 
 
Freshman Lyron Bennett (Boston, Mass.) scored a game-high 22 points on 9-12 shooting while also picking up four assists. Junior Greg Jones (Bronx, N.Y.) picked up 15 points, seven rebounds, and blocked two shots. Junior C.J. Seaforth (Hamden, Conn.) also scored 15 points, and  Mikey Mozzicato (Wethersfield, Conn.) chipped in with 10 points. Zack Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) scored six points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and recorded five assists. 
 

How It Happened
  • Southern got off to a hot start, outscoring the Devils 12-2 in the game's first five and a half minutes. Jones scored eight of the Owls' 12 points. 
  • Southern opened up a 21-4 lead with 10:40 to go in the half. After the Devils cut the lead to 21-11, Southern went on a 16-4 run to take a 37-15 lead with 1:03 to go, their largest of the half, and took a 40-21 lead into halftime 
  • Southern opened up the second half on a 13-5 run to take a 53-26 with 15:25 remaining. Bennett scored six of Southern's 13 points, while Mozziacato added five points of his own. 
  • With 11:22 remaining, University of the Sciences cut Southern's lead to 59-36, the closest the score would be the rest of the game. The Owls then went on a 19-7 run to take their largest lead of the game, 78-43, as Seaforth scored eight consecutive points of his own to kick start the run, before Southern held on to an 80-52 win. 
 
Notes
  • Bennett set career-highs in points with 22 and field goals made with nine while tying a career high in three-pointers made with three. 
  • Jones recorded season-highs in points with 15, field goals made with six, and assists with three.
  • Mozzicato also scored a season-high 10 points. 
  • Levar Allen scored seven points and went a perfect 3-3 from the field in his first game since Nov. 13 against Caldwell. 
  • Penn recorded game-highs in rebounds and assists, with his five assists setting a new career-high. 
  • Southern's 28-point victory is their second largest margin of victory this season (33 vs Concordia on Nov. 23).  
  • Southern now has two wins by at least 25 points for the first time since the 2015-16 season, where they defeated Dominican 99-69 on Nov. 14, 2015 and Caldwell 100-71 on Dec. 17, 2015.
