Baseball Drops Season Opener At Palm Beach Atlantic, 6-1

PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team lost to Palm Beach Atlantic, 6-1, in the Owls' season opener in Palm Beach, Fla. The Owls open the year at 0-1 while PBA improves to 3-5 on the season.

Owls' starter Nate Carney (Bristol, Conn.) took the loss after allowing three runs over six innings after scattering eight hits and striking out three. All three of the runs came in the second inning before Carney settled in and pitched four strong innings before leaving the game.

At the plate, the Owls mustered just five hits, with their lone run coming on a batter hit by a pitch. Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.), Tyler Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.), Connor
Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.), John Spoto (Stamford, Conn.) and Nolan Cloutier (Wallingford, Conn.) all had hits for the Owls while Spoto scored Southern's only run.

Notes

  • The Owls' Opening Day loss was their first since the 2015 season and ended a run of three-straight seasons that Southern started the year at 1-0.
  • Criscuolo was credited with a RBI in the second inning when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
  • Michael Charest (Meriden, Conn.) was hit for three runs in 1 1/3 innings before Cameron Winiarz (Uncasville, Conn.) came on in relief and retired both batters he faced in the eighth.
  • Redahan had the Owls' hit of the season with a single to lead off the second inning.
  • The Owls' third inning presented an opportunity for Southern to rally. After Spoto led off with a walk and Cloutier singled to right, Jim Palmer's (Milford, Conn.) ground ball to first moved both runners into scoring position. After Lamberti walked, Criscuolo was hit by a pitch to force Spoto in with the Owls first run – of the game, and of the season. It knocked Palm Beach starter Mitchell Carroll out of the game in favor of Heath Hawkins, who retired the next two SCSU batters to end the threat.
