HIALEAH, Fla. - The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team split a doubleheader against Florida National University - winning the first game, 16-7, before dropping the second game, 13-5. The Owls go to 1-2 on the season while Florida National drops to 4-8 on the year.
In the first game, Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) was 5-for-5 with a home run and five RBI. Tyler Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.) was 4-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI while he also became the first Owl in nine years to record a multiple-homer game. Mac Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) had three hits while Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.), Nolan Cloutier (Wallingford, Conn.) and Anthony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) all had two hits in the Owls' win.
Freshman hurler Jared Henry (West Stockbridge, Mass.) picked up the win in his collegiate debut. The first-year Owl came on in relief and held FNU to two runs on two hits over 3 2/3 innings.
In the second game, sophomore Cam O'Toole (Grafton, Mass.) and freshman Eric Ross (Montville, Conn.) both connected for their first career home runs.
Notes
- Criscuolo becomes the first player since Ryan Geffert in 2010 to homer twice in a game. Geffert connected for three home runs in a game twice that season – once on Apr. 7 against Bridgeport and then again against Concordia on Apr. 19.
- Criscuolo was also the last player to drive in five runs in a game after he did it against Adelphi on Mar. 16, 2018.
- Lamberti also becomes the first Owl to record five hits in a game since Kyle Hart did it against Molloy on Feb. 25, 2017.
- Criscuolo's two home runs, and Lamberti's homer, give the Owls their first three home run game as a team since Geffert's outing against Concordia on Apr. 19, 2010.
- Following Criscuolo and Lamberti's first-game performance, O'Toole and Ross became the latest Owl teammates to homer in the same game since Kyle Hart and Jake Paul went deep against Merrimack on Apr. 9, 2016.
- The Owls, as a team, hit six home runs all last season, with Criscuolo leading the way with three. He now has seven for his career.
- The Owls' 21 runs scored are their most in a doubleheader since Apr. 29, 2017 when Southern posted the same amount in a sweep of American International College.
