NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team dropped its season-opener against Molloy College 14-12. The Owls drop to 0-1, while the Lions improve to 1-0.
Samantha Cozzolino (Hamden, Conn.) led the Owls as she tallied three goals and one assist as well as four draw controls.
Hailey Gordon (Niantic, Conn.) registered three goals and one ground ball while
Laura Morton (Somers, Conn.) recorded 13 saves in the loss.
FIRST HALF
- The Owls went up 2-0 at the start of the game but the Lions answered with three consecutive goals to take a 3-2 lead. Both teams traded goals leading to a 6-5 score at halftime.
- Cozzolino scored two of her eventual three goals in the first half and goalkeeper Laura Morton recorded eight saves.
SECOND HALF
- Southern held a lead for most of the half after scoring four consecutive goals midway through the second to go up 12-8, the largest lead of the game for either team. However, Molloy went on to score six unanswered goals to end the game and seal the 14-12 win.
FACTS
- Samantha Cozzolino scored the 100th goal of her career with her first goal of the game. With her three goals today she sits 4th all-time at Southern with 102 and trails Carolynn Keal '18 with 105.
- Hailey Gordon tallied her first collegiate hat-trick in the loss. Her previous career-high was on March 28, 2019 against AIC where she scored two.
- Three Owls recorded their first collegiate goal: Kelly Jagodzinski, Bayleigh Takacs and Karlie Rowe.
