Baseball Tops Lynn, 5-4

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team defeated Lynn University, 5-4, in a non-conference matchup in Boca Raton, Fla. With the win, Southern improves to 7-9 overall while Lynn drops to 14-10 on the season.

Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) was 3-for-5 with a RBI while Connor Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.) put together a 2-for-5 day with a run scored. Mac Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.0 also drove in two runs while John Spoto (Stamford, Conn.) drove in a run as well.

Joe Nemchek (Trumbull, Conn.) picked up his first career win after holding Lynn to four runs – three earned – on five hits over 5 2/3. Quantique White (New London, Conn.) picked up his second save of the season, and 12th of his career, after logging 3 1/3 innings of scoreless ball while scattering two hits and striking out four.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Lynn manufactured a run in the bottom of the third inning, capped by a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead, the Owls put three across in the top of the fourth to jump out to a 3-1 lead.
  • Lamberti and Redahan both singled, and stole a base to move into scoring position at second and third before Finnegan slammed a double to the left-center field gap to plate both runners and give the Owls a 2-1 lead. Finnegan scored to give the Owls a 3-1 lead off of Spoto's single.
  • Lynn chipped away at the Owls' lead, using a lead-off triple in the fifth before a ground ball allowed the runner to score. In the sixth, Lynn took advantage of an fielding error to tie the game at 3-3.
  • After Quantique White (New London, Conn.) replaced Nemchek, Lynn took a 4-3 lead on a single back to the box. White was able to work through the rest of the inning without giving up another run.
  • In the seventh, Anthony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) walked to lead off the inning before stealing second and third before Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.) walked. After Palmer stole second, O'Toole's ground ball to short scored Zambito with the tying run.
  • Lamberti followed with his third hit of the day to score Palmer and give Southern a 5-4 lead.

NOTES
  • Redahan's single in the fourth inning pushed his hitting streak to 15 games. It's the longest at Southern since Lamberti produced a 17-game hitting streak in 2017.
  • The Owls win against Lynn is their first since 2016 and their third in 10 meetings all-time.
  • Spoto ended up driving in six runs in a pair of wins for the day as the Owls bombarded Caldwell for 22 runs in the morning – of which Spoto drove in five.
  • His three-hit day against the Knights gives Lamberti his first multiple-hit game since Feb. 23 when he stung Molloy for four hits.
