Owls Cruise Past Post University 18-5

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University lacrosse team cruised past Post University 18-5 at Lamoy Field to collect their first win of the 2019 campaign. The Owls improve to 1-7 overall, while the Eagles fall to 1-3 overall.
 
Samantha Cozzolino (Hamden, Conn.) scored three goals on four shots, tallied three assists and collected seven draw controls. Stephanie Seymour (North Branford, Conn.) registered three goals on five shots, recorded three assists, had two ground balls and two draw controls. Hailey Gordon (Niantic, Conn.) led the Owls in goals with four on six shots and had two draw controls, while teammate Karlie Rowe (Niantic, Conn.) notched three goals on seven shots and added an assist. Laura Morton (Somers, Conn.) collected her first win of the season as the goaltender recorded six saves in 60 minutes of play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Southern opened the scoring in the 26th minute as Stephanie Seymour scored back-to-back goals within a 19-second span to give the Owls a 2-0 lead. Southern scored seven unanswered goals and increased their lead to 9-0. During that run Cozzolino, Rowe and Gordon scored two goals apiece and Morgan Chase (Windsor, Conn.) added another for the Owls.
  • Post got on the scoreboard with 19 minutes remaining in the first half. The Owls netted two more goals from Karlie Rowe and Amanda Murray (Bow, N.H.), both assisted by Cozzolino. The Eagles hit the back of the net once more with 14:49 left in the first, 11-2.
  • Southern outscored Post 5-1 throughout the rest of the first and held a 15-3 lead at halftime.
  • It was a low-scoring second half as the Owls outscored the Eagles 3-2 with goals from Chase, Seymour and Kelly Jagodzinski (Stamford, Conn.) to seal the 18-5 win.
 
FACTS
  • This is Kevin Siedlecki's first career win as head coach of the Southern Connecticut Lacrosse team. 
  • Four Owls registered hat-tricks today: Samantha Cozzolino, Stephanie Seymour, Hailey Gordon and Karlie Rowe. The last time four Owls had three or more goals was on April 15, 2017 against Franklin Pierce when Carolynn Keal (4), Nicole Healey (4), Samantha Cozzolino (3) and Morgan Chase (3) each had hat-tricks.
  • Southern was able to net 18 goals for the first time this season. The last time the Owls hit 18 plus goals was on April 13, 2018 against Southern New Hampshire when they scored 21.
  • Cozzolino registered her twentieth hat-trick of her collegiate career and fifth of the season. She leads the Owls with 21 goals and nine assists so far this year.
  • With her three goals against Post, Cozzolino now sits in 2nd place with 120 career goals and trails Nicole Healey '18 for 1st place all-time at SCSU with 172. With her three assists against Post, she sits in 3rd place with 36 career assists and trails Nicole Healey '18 for 2nd place all-time at SCSU with 41. With her six points against Post, Cozzolino sits in 3rd place with 156 career points and trails Carolynn Keal '18 for 2nd place all-time at SCSU with 161. 
  • With four goals in the win over Post, Hailey Gordon has recorded her fourth multiple-goal game of the season and sixth of her career. This is the first four-goal game of her collegiate career and her second hat-trick with the first coming on February 24 against Molloy earlier this year.

The Owls will head to Colchester, Vt. on March 23 for a conference matchup against Saint Michael's.
