Cozzolino's Heroics Lead Owls Past Saint Michael's in Overtime Thriller, 13-12

COLCHESTER, Vt. -  The Southern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team edged Saint Michael's in an overtime thriller, 13-12, at Duffy Field. The Owls improve to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in the Northeast 10, while the Purple Knights drop to 1-4 overall and 0-4 in the Northeast 10.
 
Samantha Cozzolino (Hamden, Conn.) tallied a game-high nine points on the day with five goals and four assists, while grabbing five draw controls. Stephanie Seymour (North Branford, Conn.) registered four goals on six shots and also had two draw controls and two ground balls. Laura Morton (Somers, Conn.) recorded 10 saves through 63:49 minutes allowing 12 goals against in the Owls' second-consecutive win.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Southern opened the scoring in the first minutes of play as Cozzolino hit the back of the net with an assist by Bayleigh Takacs (Sparta, N.J.). Morgan Chase doubled the Owls lead at the 28:34 mark off an assist by Kelly Jagodzinski (Stamford, Conn.). The Purple Knights scored back-to-back goals by Kate Martin in the next two minutes tying the game at two all.
  • It was a back-and-forth affair through the next 18 minutes of play as the game was tied four different times until the Owls scored back-to-back goals by Seymour and Karlie Rowe (Niantic, Conn.), both assisted by Cozzolino, which gave the Owls a 7-5 lead at the end of the first period.
  • Cozzolino increased the Owls lead to 8-5 right out of the gates, however the Purple Knights scored three unanswered goals to tie the game at eight apiece. 
  • Cozzolino struck again giving the Owls a 9-8 lead, but four consecutive goals from Saint Michael's gave them the 12-9 lead with 13:28 left in regulation.
  • Southern Connecticut's Seymour scored an unassisted goal at the 10:08 mark to cut the Purple Knights lead down to two. Then, Cozzolino scored a man-up goal with three minutes left to play, followed by Seymour scoring the tying goal with 32 second left in the game to force overtime.
  • Samantha Cozzolino was the overtime hero as she scored an unassisted goal at the 2:11 mark to seal the 13-12 overtime win over Saint Michael's in Colchester.

  • The Owls stole the victory, 13-12, over Saint Michael's. The last time the Owls won a game in overtime was on April 27, 2016 when they defeated American International College, 7-6.
  • The Owls have now won back-to-back games for the first since Mar. 13 & 14, 2018 against Saint Michael's and UC-Colorado Springs, respectively.
  • Samantha Cozzolino notched nine points (5 goals, 4 assists). The last time a women's lacrosse player collected nine points in a game was Nicole Healey '18 when she had nine points on March 14, 2018 against UC-Colorado Springs.
  • The last time Cozzolino records five-or-more goals in a single game was on April 13, 2018 when she had seven goals against Southern New Hampshire. 
  • With four goals, Stephanie Seymour has collected four-or-more goals in three-straight games.
  • This is the second-straight game that Cozzolino and Seymour have recorded hat tricks.
  • With her five goals against Saint Michael's, Cozzolino now sits in 2nd place with 125 career goals and trails Nicole Healey '18 for 1st place all-time at SCSU with 172. With her four assists against Saint Michael's, she sits in 3rd place with 40 career assists and trails Nicole Healey '18 for 2nd place all-time at SCSU with 41. With her nine points against Saint Michael's, Cozzolino sits in sole possession of 2nd place with 165 career points and passing Carolynn Keal '18 for 2nd place all-time at SCSU, who had 161.
