Women's Lacrosse Falls 13-8 To AIC In Conference Play

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.– The Southern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse squad dropped a 13-8 decision against American International College. The Owls fall to 2-8 overall and 1-5 in the Northeast 10, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 3-6 on the year and 1-4 in conference play.
 
Samantha Cozzolino (Hamden, Conn.) notched three goals on five shots, had one assist, grabbed four ground balls and one draw control. Stephanie Seymour (North Branford, Conn.) tallied three goals on four shots and recorded one assist, while teammate Morgan Chase (Windsor, Conn.) registered one goal and one assist in the loss.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Southern jumped out to an early lead as Staphanie Seymour scored the first goal of the game assisted by Karlie Rowe (Niantic, Conn.), the Yellow Jackets answered with a goal of their own to tie the game at one all.
  • The Owls rallied and scored back-to-back goals off an unassisted goal by Samantha Cozzolino at the 25:52 mark, followed by a Morgan Chase goal assisted by Seymour to double their lead, 3-1.
  • After six scoreless minutes AIC found the back of the net with 18:57 left in the half, 3-2. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Owls 2-1 over the next 15 minutes of play to deadlock the score at 4 apiece going into halftime.
  • American International continued their first half surge with two unanswered goals to take a 6-4 lead. The Owls responded with two goals from Cozzolino tying the game at six all. 
  • Seymour sniped a goal at the 22:35 mark assisted by Chase regaining the lead, however the Yellow Jackets tied it up two minutes later and went on a six-goal run to seal the 13-8 win over the Owls.
 
FACTS
  • With her three goals, Cozzolino registered her 22nd hat trick of her collegiate career and seventh of the season. She leads the Owls with 29 goals and 14 assists so far this year.
  • Over the last three games, Stephanie Seymour has tallied 15 points with 11 goals and four assists, and has surpassed her points total from the 2018 season of four goals and one assist. 
  • With three goals, Stephanie Seymour has collected three-or-more goals in four-straight games.
  • This is the third-straight game that Cozzolino and Seymour have recorded hat tricks.
  • With her three goals against AIC, Cozzolino now sits in 2nd place with 128 career goals and trails Nicole Healey '18 for 1st place all-time at SCSU with 172. With her one assist against AIC, she is tied for 2ndplace all-time in career assists with Nicole Healey '18 at 41. With her four points against AIC, Cozzolino sits in 2nd place with 169 career points and trails Nicole Healey '18 for 1stplace all-time at SCSU with 213.
