Baseball Falls To Adelphi, 7-2

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team lost a Northeast 10 Conference matchup to Adelphi, 7-2, at The Ballpark at SCSU in New Haven, Conn. With the loss, the Owls drop to 9-13 overall and 0-3 in the NE10 while Adelphi improves to 13-4 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with a run scored while Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.) was 2-for-5 for the afternoon. Nate Carney (Bristol, Conn.) took the loss after a solid start that saw several costly errors result in five unearned runs. Carney was hit for two earned runs while giving up eight hits and striking out four over 7 2/3. Brendan Ebert (Berlin, Conn.) worked the final 1 1/3 innings and gave up one hit while striking out two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Carney cruised through the Adelphi lineup through the first four innings, allowing just one base runner while retiring nine-straight batters at one point.
  • After working out of a jam in the fifth, he gave up a one-out double in the sixth before a single plated the run to give Adelphi a 1-0 lead.
  • Adelphi struck for three runs in the sixth – only one of which was earned – to grab a 4-0 lead.
  • The Panthers tacked on three more runs in the seventh, all of which were unearned, to push their lead to 7-0.
  • In the ninth, DeMartino stroked his second hit of the day with a line drive to the right-center field gap for a double. He moved to third on a wild pitch as Mac Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) walked.
  • After John Spoto (Stamford, Conn.) worked another walk, Nolan Cloutier (Wallingford, Conn.) picked up a RBI when he was hit by a pitch before Anthony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) worked a walk to force in another run before Palmer flew out to end the game.

NOTES
  • Carney has been solid on the mound over his last three starts, which have resulted in one win. The junior Southpaw has allowed four earned runs over his last 21 2/3 innings and carries a 1.74 ERA in his last three starts. Additionally, he's scattered 19 hits while striking out 17 with only three walks and one extra-base hit.
  • Finnegan currently leads the team with an active streak of eight games in which he's reached base safely.
  • DeMartino has now hit in three-straight games while Wednesday's ninth-inning double was his ninth of the season.
  • Connor Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.) and Palmer also own four-game hitting streaks.
  • Redahan also leads the team in hits (29), average (.345), doubles (10) and slugging percentage (.500).
  • Palmer is hitting .412 (7-17) over his last four games and has boosted his season average from .276 to .303 in that span.
  • Zambito's walk was his team-leading 17th of the season.
