Baseball Splits NE10 Doubleheader Against Saint Rose

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team split a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader against The College of Saint Rose, winning the first game, 6-4, before losing the second game, 7-3. The Owls go to 10-14 overall and 1-4 in the NE10 while Saint Rose moves to 7-9 overall and 3-2 in conference action.

Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) was 4-for-7 with a RBI, two stolen bases and four runs scored in the two games while Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) collected three hits and drove in five runs. Anthony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) also had five stolen bases in the doubleheader, including four in the second game. Brandon White (Simsbury, Conn.) improved to 2-0 on the season after holding the Golden Knights to one run on three hits while striking out four over five innings pitched. Quantique White (New London, Conn.) picked up his team-leading third save of the year after pitching a perfect ninth in the first game.

GAME 1
  • The Owls used a three-run first inning to get out in front, powered by a RBI double by Lamberti that scored Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.) before DeMartino drove in Connor Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.) and Mac Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) drove home Lamberti.
  • Saint Rose pushed a run across in the fourth, before DeMartino doubled home Redahan and Lamberti in the fifth to give the Owls a 5-1 lead.
  • Saint Rose chipped away at Southern's lead, scoring three times in the seventh and eighth innings to pull within a run, 5-4.
  • Anthony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) then drove in John Spoto (Stamford, Conn.) in the eighth to give the Owls a two-run lead, 6-4.
  • Palmer and Redahan were both 2-for-4 with a run scored in the second game while Nolan Cloutier (Wallingford, Conn.) also recorded two hits. DeMartino drove in three of his five runs for the day.

GAME 2
  • Saint Rose scored five times in the first two innings, including a four-run second.
  • In the third, DeMartino tripled to scored Lamberti and Zambito to cut the Golden Knights' lead to 5-2.
  • Redahan then drove in Lamberti in the fifth to get the Owls to within two runs, 5-3.
  • Saint Rose scored two more runs in the seventh to cap the scoring for the day.

NOTES
  • White's outing was his third-straight start in which he allowed one-or-fewer earned runs while allowing less than three hits. He's now given up just 12 earned runs in 29 innings pitched for a team-best 3.72 ERA.
  • Ronnie Rossomando (Stratford, Conn.) took the loss in the second game after giving up six runs – five earned – on five hits while striking out six over six innings. After five of those runs crossed in the game's first two innings, Rossomando settled in and retired 13 of the next 14 hitters that he faced.
  • Cameron Winiarz (Uncasville, Conn.) pitched the seventh and eighth, allowing one earned run without giving up a hit while striking out three. Freshman Jared Henry (West Stockbridge, Mass.) pitched a scoreless, hitless ninth.
  • DeMartino entered the day's doubleheader with two RBI in his previous 11 games before driving in five runs in the first game and two in the second.
  • Lamberti erased an 0-for-16 slide over his last four games with his first-inning double before recording three more hits for the afternoon. He is now second in the Bobcats' lineup with 30 hits for the season.
  • Redahan extended his hitting streak to six games with a 3-for-8 afternoon. He currently leads the team in average (.348), hits (32) and doubles (11).
  • Cloutier's two hits in the first game gave him his team-leading 12th multiple-hit game of the season. He checks-in at .330 (29-88) with 10 doubles, 15 RBI and 21 runs scored.
  • Zambito has now stole a base in 10 of his last 12 games while his four in the second game are a season-high for the Owls, matching Lamberti against Molloy on Feb. 23. Zambito is now 21-for-23 in stolen base attempts for the year. He also scored his team-leading 23rd run of the season.
  • Palmer was 2-for-4 with a run scored in the first game, before sitting the second game out. He has now hit in five-straight games and has recorded multiple hits in three of his last four.
