GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team dropped a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at nationally-ranked No. 23 Adelphi, 8-3, in Garden City, N.Y. With the loss, Southern drops to 12-19 overall and 3-9 in the NE10 while Adelphi improves to 21-5 overall and 11-1 in the NE10.
Tyler Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.) hit his team-leading third home run of the season while
John Spoto (Stamford, Conn.) and
Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.) each drove in a run. On the mound,
Tommy Hughes (Newington, Conn.) pitched two scoreless, hitless innings while striking out two batters in relief.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Owls got on the board first with a two-run second inning. Mac Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) walked with one out before Anthony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) reached on an error. Spoto then singled up the middle to score Finnegan before Palmer singled to score Zambito and give Southern a 2-0 lead.
- After Adelphi cut the Owls lead in half, 2-1, with a run in the bottom of the second, Criscuolo led off the next inning with a home run to right field to give the Owls a 3-1 lead.
- In the bottom of the inning, Adelphi's Thomas Colombo connected for a two-run homer to tie the game. The Panthers went on to score in the fourth and fifth, and then plated three runs in the sixth to grab an 8-3 lead.
NOTES
- Criscuolo's home run is his third of the season, and the first for the Owls since Mar. 11 against Merrimack. The fourth-year Owl now has 22 RBI for the year, including nine in six games since returning from a 15-game absence due to injury.
- Criscuolo also a team-best 10-game active hitting streak and has reached base in 14-straight games. Criscuolo has a hit in 13 of his 14 games played this season, and has reached base safely in each one for a .507 on-base percentage and a .702 slugging percentage.
- Spoto has now driven in a run in back-to-back games.
- Palmer has now driven in a run in his last four games.
- Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) and Connor Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.) both had hits in the game as well, giving Lamberti a four-game hitting streak while Redahan's third inning single was his team-leading 38th hit of the season.
- Zambito also scored his team-leading 28th run of the season, including five in his last four games.
- Hughes made his sixth relief appearance of the season and posted his first scoreless outing of his first collegiate career. Hughes hasn't allowed more than two runs in any outing in relief this season.
