Baseball's Comeback Bid Falls Short In 8-7 Loss To Post

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team took an 8-7 loss to Post University in a non-conference matchup at The Ballpark at SCSU in New Haven, Conn. With the loss, the Owls drop to 12-20 overall while Post improves to 16-15 on the year.

Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) was 2-for-5 with two RBI while Connor Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.) and Mac Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) also drove in two runs on the day. Tyler Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.), Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.) and Cam O'Toole (Grafton, Mass.) all scored twice for the Owls while O'Toole also collected two hits and drawing two walks.

On the mound, Jared Henry (West Stockbridge, Mass.) struck out three of the four batters he faced while Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Post used a two-run first inning, and a two-run second inning, to jump out to a 4-0 lead heading to the bottom of the second inning. Criscuolo walked to lead-off the inning before Redahan and Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) singled to load the bases before Finnegan's sacrifice fly to center scored Criscuolo to pull the Owls within three runs, 4-1, through two innings.
  • In the third, Palmer led off the inning with a single up the middle before O'Toole worked a walk. Lamberti then doubled down the right field line to score Palmer and move O'Toole to third. Redahan plated O'Toole with a sacrifice fly to move the Owls within a run, 4-3.
  • In the fifth, Post scored three runs off of a two-run homer from Matt Goehrig before Evan Schaffner drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to make it 7-3.
  • After Tyler Melko's sacrifice fly scored Travious Ford to give the Eagles a five-run lead, 8-3, the Owls scored twice in the bottom half of the inning. Criscuolo singled up the middle before Redahan walked. DeMartino then drove Criscuolo home with a single past Post's first baseman that moved Redahan to third. Finnegan then delivered another sacrifice fly to score Redahan to move the Owls within three runs, 8-5.
  • Quantique White (New London, Conn.) sat the Eagles down in order as the Owls headed into their final at-bat with a three-run deficit. Palmer walked to lead off the inning before O'Toole singled to left field. Both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch before Lamberti drove in Palmer, with O'Toole going to third, on a double down the right field line. O'Toole broke for home on Redahan's ground ball to short to move the Owls within a run, 8-7, as Lamberti represented the tying run at third base. DeMartino then hit a fly ball the opposite way but Post's left fielder was able to track it down to end the game.

NOTES
  • Lamberti's game signaled his first two-double outing of the season, while he also drove in two runs for just the second time this season. He's now hit safely in five-straight games and is now tied with Redahan with a team-high 39 hits for the year.
  • Redahan has now hit safely in four-straight games and has driven in five runs over his last six games played.
  • Finnegan's two sacrifice fly balls give him a team-leading 25 RBI for the season. The game was also his team-leading seventh with multiple RBIs.
  • Criscuolo extends his hitting streak to 11 games – the longest active streak on the roster – while he has also reached base safely in every game this season. Criscuolo now has nine hits and seven walks in his last seven games since returning from injury while also driving in nine runs.
  • O'Toole recorded his first multiple-hit game in his last 10 outings while his two runs scored are his most since Mar. 15.
  • DeMartino has now reached base safely in 13-straight games.
