Baseball Splits NE10 Doubleheader At Le Moyne

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team split a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader at Le Moyne, winning the first game, 10-6, before dropping the nightcap, 5-1. The Owls go to 13-21 overall and 4-10 in the NE10 while Le Moyne is now 15-18 overall and 6-7 in conference play.

Tyler Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.) was 4-for-8 for the day with a run scored, while Mac Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) and John Spoto (Stamford, Conn.) both hit three-run home runs in the Owls' win. Spoto was also 2-for-3 in the second game.

On the mound, Joe Nemchek (Trumbull, Conn.) picked up the win after holding the Dolphins to one run on three hits over six innings pitched. Freshman Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) pitched the final three innings for his second save of the season. In the second game, Ronnie Rossomando (Stratford, Conn.) gave up two earned runs on five hits over six innings while striking out seven.

GAME 1 (SCSU 10, LE MOYNE 6)
  • The Owls put three runs on the board in their first at-bat when Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.) and Cameron O'Toole (Grafton, Mass.) both singled to lead-off the inning before Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) bunted them over. After Criscuolo walked to load the bases, Connor Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.) was hit by a pitch to force Palmer home before Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) walked to force O'Toole home. Criscuolo then scored on a passed ball to give the Owls a 3-0 lead.
  • In the third inning, Redahan singled to lead-off the inning before DeMartino drew a walk. Finnegan then followed with his third home run of the season to give Southern a 6-0 lead.
  • In the fifth, Redahan was hit by a pitch to start the inning before DeMartino worked another walk. After Finnegan went down on strikes, Spoto connected for his first career home run to give the Owls a 9-0 lead.
  • After Le Moyne got a run back in the bottom of the inning, Southern grabbed a 10-1 lead in the top of the sixth. O'Toole reached on an error before Criscuolo and Redahan singled to load the bases. O'Toole then scored on a wild pitch to push Southern's lead to nine runs.
  • Le Moyne chipped away with three runs in the seventh, another in the eighth and then strung together three, two-out singles in the bottom of the ninth.

GAME 2 (LE MOYNE 5, SCSU 1)
  • Le Moyne struck for runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. In the top of the fourth inning, Lamberti stroked a one-out single through the right side of the infield before Criscuolo singled up the middle. On a double-steal, the catcher's throw ended up in center field, allowing Lamberti to score with the Owls lone run.
  • Le Moyne scored again in the sixth before adding two more runs in the seventh.

NOTES
  • With the win in the first game of the doubleheader, Nemchek has now won his last three starts, including two against NE10 opponents. The first-year Owl and transfer from UConn Avery Point has given up just two runs in his last two starts against Stonehill and Le Moyne for a 1.50 ERA with 11 hits allowed over 12 innings pitched.
  • With a hit in each game of the doubleheader, Criscuolo has now hit in 13-straight games for the second-longest hitting streak of the season behind Redahan's 16-game run.
  • Criscuolo has also reached base safely in 17-straight games, which stands as the longest of his career. He's also scored a run in eight-straight games, the longest run-scoring streak of the season for the Owls.
  • With four walks in the first game, while also scoring two runs, DeMartino had reached base safely in 14-straight games before failing to reach base in the second game.
  • With a pair of hits in the second game of the doubleheader, Lamberti (42) passed Redahan (41) for the team-lead in hits for the year.
  • With a pair of hits in the first game, Palmer tied Nolan Cloutier (Wallingford, Conn.) for a team-leading 12 multiple-hit games.
  • Finnegan's three-run homer gives him his fifth three-RBI game of the season and a team-high eight multiple-RBI games.
