Men's Soccer Defeats New York Tech, 3-1, For First Win Of 2019

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team defeated New York Tech, 3-1, in non-conference matchup at President's Stadium in Old Westbury N.Y. for their first victory of the season in the first ever meeting between the two schools. With the win, Southern improves to 1-0-1 on the season, while New York Tech falls to 0-3-0. 

Two goals early in the first half set the tone for the Owls, as sophomore Daniel Utgaard (Kristiansand, Norway) and freshman Tomas Terrugi (Tornquist, Argentina) gave the Owls the lead going into halftime. Senior Devante Teixeira (Boston, Mass.) scored late to put the game out of reach. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Owls first goal came off the foot Utgaard in the 10th minute of the first half to give the Owls a 1-0 lead, his first goal of the season. Noah Rattet (Guilford, Conn.) recorded the assist on the play.
  • In the 19th minute, Terrugi scored his first goal of his collegiate career to give the Owls a 2-0 lead, which they would take into halftime. 
  • New York Tech scored in the 57th minute to cut into the Owls lead, but Teixeira scored his first goal of the season in the 88th minute to give Southern a 3-1 lead.

Notes
  • Utgaard's goal was the third goal of his college career.
  • Rattet recorded his first assist of his college career. 
  • Teixeira's goal was the eighth goal of his college career, leading all active Owls.  
  • The three goals scored by Southern was their most goals scored in a game since scoring five against Nyack College on Oct. 6, 2018.
