Football Falls To Pace, 31-14

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.  – The Southern Connecticut State University football team lost to Pace, 31-14, in a non-conference match-up at Pace Stadium in Pleasantville, N.Y. With the loss, the Owls drop to 0-2 to open the season while Pace improves to 1-1 on the year.
 
Matt Sanzaro amassed 226 total yards and two touchdowns in the game after completing 14-of-34 pass attempts for 170 yards and a touchdown pass to Jaylynn Cundiff while also running for 56 yards on 10 attempts including a five-yard touchdown run. Jonmichael Bivona had 49 yards on 11 carries on the ground and also made three catches for 25 yards. Julian Chung had two catches for 52 yards, one for 20 yards and a game-high 32 in the fourth quarter.
 
Defensively, Mehki Barnett had a game-high nine tackles – six solo – including a sack. Vance Upham had four tackles, a sack and the Owls' first interception of the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Pace's Carlton Aiken shook-off a pair of Southern defenders and rolled out to find Darius Jones in the Owls end zone for a 32-yard tally.
  • Pat Davis converted on a field goal from 18 yards out of field goal to give the Setters a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Kashmier Jackson scored from inside the five to push the Setters' lead to 17-0 before Aiken scored on a keeper to give Pace a 24-0 lead heading into halftime.
  • In the third, Jhalen Bien-Aime rushed from seven yards out and finished off a touchdown drive with a dive between two Owls defenders at the goal line to give Pace a 31-0 lead.
  • Coming out of the half, Matt Sanzaro led the Owls on an 11-play, 65-yard drive that he capped off with a five-yard scramble for a touchdown to put the Owls on the board, 31-7. JonMichael Bivona also rushed for 18 yards on the drive.
  • Midway through the fourth quarter, Sanzaro led the Owls  on a 12-play, 70-yard drive that end with an eight-yard strike to Jaylynn Cundiff in the back of the Setters' end zone to make it 31-14.
 
NOTES
  • Cundiff's fourth-quarter touchdown reception was his first of the season, and also of the sophomore's career. Cundiff returned a punt last season for his only career touchdown entering the game against Pace.
  • Brandon Swain-Price, a transfer from Assumption, had a team-leading four receptions for 31 years in his SCSU debut.
  • Sanzaro shook-off a tough first half to go 12-for-23 for 139 yards while also rushing for 57 yards in the second half.
  • As a team, the Owls outscored Pace for the second half, 14-7.

Southern returns home to host Assumption for the Owls first Northeast 10 Conference matchup of the 2019 season on Friday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
