Football Falls To Assumption, 19-7, In NE10 Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University football team lost to Assumption, 19-7, in the Owls' first Northeast 10 Conference matchup of the 2019 season. Southern drops to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in NE10 play while Assumption improves to 2-1 on the season including a 1-0 mark in conference action.

Jonmichael Bivona (Stamford, Conn.) ran for a team-leading 89 yards, including a season-best 45-yard run. Senior quarterback Matt Sanzaro (Wethersfield, Conn.) passed for 124 yards and scrambled for 22 more while also throwing one touchdown. Sanzaro hooked up with Izaiah Sanders (Stamford, Conn.) in the second half for his first touchdown of the season. Sanders had four catches for 46 yards. 

Defensively, Kyle Armour (Newington, Conn.) registered a team-best nine tackles, including six solo bids. Harrison Smith (Rochester, Mass.) and Hasan Dominick (Jersey City, N.J.) both tallied five tackles apiece while JayChar Howell (Yonkers, N.Y.) had three tackles, a pass break-up and a fumble recovery. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Assumption's Easton Turner hooked up with Tighe Beck on a seven-yard touchdown pass to put the Greyhounds on the board, 6-0, while the Owls blocked the ensuing point-after-attempt.
  • Assumption took a 13-0 lead after Berreal Neal powered his way for an eight-yard touchdown to cap a 99-yard drive for the Greyhounds.
  • Early in the third, the Owls broke through when Sanzaro connected with Sanders at the Greyhounds 13-yard line before the Owls receiver barrelled his way through the Assumption secondary to get Southern on the board. 
  • Turner tossed his second touchdown pass of the night on a 19-yard score to Brevin Easton. 
NOTES
  • Bivona's 89 rushing yards are not only a career-best for the redshirt freshman but also the most yards in a game this season for Southern Connecticut. 
  • Additionally, Sanzaro's 24 rushes against the Greyhounds was also a season high. 
  • Jaylynn Cundiff also had a 39-yard kick-off return in the second half against the Greyhounds for the Owls' longest return of the year. Cundiff also made three catches for 36 yards. 
  • Armour's nine tackles matches season-highs set by JayChar Howell against Gannon and Mehki Barrett against Pace. 
  • The game itself featured four turnovers between the two teams, as well as 15 penalties for 181 yards combined as well as 14 punts - seven each - without a single punt return for the game.  
UP NEXT
Southern continues NE10 play when it travels to Springfield, Mass. to take on American International on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 12 p.m. The Owls return home on Saturday, Oct. 5 to host Franklin Pierce at 12 p.m.
