Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Falls To Assumption In Overtime, 2-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team lost to Assumption, 2-1 in overtime, in the Owls' Northeast 10 opener at Jess Dow Field in New Haven, Conn. With the loss, Southern drops to 1-1-2 overall and opens NE10 play at 0-1-0 while Assumption improves to 3-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play.

Daniel Utgaard (Kristiansand, Norway) scored his team-leading second goal of the season off a feed from Juan Avila (Clinton, Conn.). For Assumption, Jason Lages set-up Kevin Hernandez with the game-tying goal before scoring the game-winner in overtime.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Owls scored midway through the first half when the Owls found themselves on a breakaway. Devante Teixeria, on the left, fed Avila on the right who then centered a pass to Utgaard in the box. Utgaard's first bid was turned away by Greyhounds keeper Sebastian Jimenez before Utgaard collected the rebound off his own shot and drilled the ball to the back of the net.
  • Hernandez finally broke through for Assumption in the 82nd minute when he knocked down a pass from the wing from Lages and redirected past Southern freshman goalkeeper Andrey Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil).
  • Less than a minute into overtime, Assumption's Alex Moschella put a shot on goal that forced Carvalho to make a sprawling, brilliant save, but left the rebound on the doorstep for Lages.

NOTES
  • Utgaard's goal was the second of the season and matches his output from 2018 to give him four for his career.
  • Avila's assist was his first of the season to go along with two goals for five points - good for second on the Owls' roster.
  • For the night, Carvalho faced nine shots-on-goal, turning away seven in his collegiate debut.
  • Assumption's second goal was the first overtime goal scored by an Owls' opponent since Oct. 22, 2016 when the Owls lost to Assumption, 3-2, in Worcester. It was the first overtime loss at Jess Dow Field since 2013.
