Football Falls To Gannon, 14-7, In Season Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University football team saw a late comeback fall short in a 14-7 loss to Gannon in the Owls' season-opener at Jess Dow Field. The Owls open the season at 0-1 while the Golden Knights start the season at 1-0.

Redshirt freshman Jonmichael Bivona (Stamford, Conn.) rushed for a game-high 86 yards on 19 carries for a 4.5 yard-per-carry average. Bivona also had a team-best run of 21 yards in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Izaiah Sanders (Stamford, Conn.) led all receivers with 93 yards on seven receptions, catching almost half of quarterback Matt Sanzaro's (Wethersfield, Conn.) completed passes. Sanzaro was 16-for-36 for 156 yards with another 39 yards on the ground including a 1-yard scamper for the Owls lone touchdown of the day. 

SCORING SUMMARY
  • Gannon 7, SCSU 0 - Melvin Blanks corralled a 32-yard pass from Jimmy Keefe to cap an eight-play, 84-yard drive that broke a 0-0 tie. 
  • Gannon 14, SCSU 0 - Joey Cox caught a seven-yard strike from Keefe to give the Golden Knights a two-touchdown lead in the closing minutes of the third quarter.
  • SCSU 7, Gannon 14 - Sanzaro's keeper from inside the Golden Knights' 1-yard line put the Owls on the board. The play followed a 39-yard pass on the Owls first possession of the drive to Sanders to set Southern up for the score.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Southern's elite defense dominated play as the Owls held Gannon to less than 200 yards (198) for the day. 
  • Bivona paced the Owls' offense as he garnered a majority of the carries as Southern racked up 166 yards on the ground.
  • Kevin Momnohin (Orange, N.J.) rushed for 49 yards on 13 carries for a 3.8 per-yard clip. 
  • Defensively, JayChar Howell (Yonkers, N.Y.) had a team-leading nine tackles, including seven solo tackdowns as well as one pass break-up. 
  • Rich Souffrant (Stratford, Conn.) had six tackles, including two for a loss with 1 1/2 sacks for a net loss of 20 yards for the game. He also recorded one pass break-up.

Following the Owls' season-opener against Gannon, Southern will travel to Pleasantville, N.Y. for a non-conference match-up at Pace on Friday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m.
