Men's Soccer Plays To 2-2 Draw In Season Opener Against Mercy College

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw in double overtime in their season opener against Mercy College at Jess Dow Field. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mercy got on the board first when Ignacio Mangada scored in the 10th minute to give Mercy a 1-0 lead.
  • Southern remained scoreless into the second half, before sophomore Juan Avila (Clinton, Conn.) scored on an assist from senior Devante Teixeira (Boston, Mass.) in the 53rd minute to even the score at one. 
  • Southern took the lead in the 60th minute, when Teixeira recorded his second assist of the game on a goal by junior Ignasi Perez Cererols (Barcelona, Spain) to give Southern a 2-1 lead.
  • Mercy evened the score at two in the 80th minute on a goal by Steven Fernandez

Notes
  • Avila's goal was the second of his collegiate career, and his first since Oct. 23, 2018 against College of Saint Rose.
  • Perez Cererols' goal was the sixth of his career. 
  • Teixeira recorded his eighth and ninth career assists of his collegiate career, and recorded his second career game with at least two assists (Oct. 6, 2018 against Nyack). 
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Aren Seeger (Naugatuck, Conn.) made nine saves. 
  • Southern scored two goals in their season opener for the first time since 2016.
