Richard's Game-Winner Leads Men's Basketball's Comeback Win Over Southern New Hampshire

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Junior Khalil Richard (Baltimore, Md.) tied a season-high with 20 points and knocked down the game-winning three-pointer with eight seconds remaining to help lead the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team past Southern New Hampshire University, 77-76, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at Moore Field House. The Owls improve to 8-6 overall and 4-4 in the NE10, while the Penmen fall to 9-7 overall and 2-6 in the NE10. 
 
Richard shot 8-for-11 overall on his way to 20 points, while senior Taurus Adams II (Milwaukee, Wisc.) scored 16 points while shooting 6-for-10 from the field and brought down eight rebounds. Freshman Lyron Bennett (Boston, Mass.) scored 13 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and tallied a game-high eight assists. Freshman Levar Allen (Richmond, Va.) also reached double-figures with 12 points, shooting 6-for-10 from the field. 
 
How It Happened
  • Southern New Hampshire jumped out to an 11-4 lead with 14:48 lead to start the game. The Owls battled back to take a 24-20 lead with 2:42 to go by going on a 22-13 run. Bennett led the charge with eight of the 22 points scored, while C.J. Seaforth (Hamden, Conn.) added a five points of his own. 
  • The Penmen ended the half on a 9-4 run over the last 2:14 to take a 31-30 lead into halftime. 
  • The Owls took a 34-31 lead on back-to-back baskets by Richard and Seaforth to begin the second half. Southern New Hampshire would go on a 23-13 run to take a 54-47 lead with 12:04 remaining, equaling their largest lead of the game. 
  • Southern Connecticut went on a 13-7 run to cut Southern New Hampshire's lead to 61-60 after Adams II made a layup. 
  • Adams II traded three-pointers with Southern New Hampshire to keep Southern's deficit at one. Sophomore Zack Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) converted on a layup with 3:32 remaining to tie the game at 68. 
  • Southern New Hampshire took a 73-70 lead on a three-pointer with 1:57 remaining and maintained their three-point lead with 40 seconds remaining. 
  • After Allen made a layup with 23 seconds left, Southern New Hampshire went 1-2 from the free throw line to take a 76-74 lead. With eight seconds remaining, Richard made a three-pointer and Southern took a 77-76 lead. Redshirt junior Isaiah Boissard (Walden, N.Y.) blocked a potential go-ahead layup at the buzzer and the Owls held on to the win. 

 
Notes
  • Richard tied a season-high with 20 points scored, done two other times this year (Nov. 13 against Caldwell and Jan. 8 against Adelphi). 
  • Richard has two 20 point-games this month, and had scored in double figures in nine of his last 11 games played. 
  • Since Dec. 10 against Saint Rose, Richard is averaging 16.6 points per game and shooting 46 percent from the field, a span of five games.
  • Adams II has scored at least 15 points in a game in seven consecutive games, dating back to Dec. 4 against New Haven. 
  • Bennett set a new career-high with eight assists. His eight assists were also the most a Southern player has had in a game this season and the most by a Southern freshmen since Tyler Douglas recorded eight against Merrimack College on Jan. 3, 2018. 
  • Allen recorded career-highs in points scored with 12 and field goals made with six. 
  • Richard, Allen, and Adams II combined to shoot 15-20 in the second half with 36 points scored. 
  • Boissard registered two blocked shots, a career-high. 
  • The Owls' defense forced 20 turnovers, their second most turnovers forced in a game this season (21 against Goldey-Beacom on Nov. 10.)
  • Southern's one-point victory was their first win within one point since Dec. 18, 2018 against Jefferson.
