Men's Basketball Edges Out Saint Michael's College, 63-61

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team defeated Saint Michael's College, 63-61, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. The Owls improve to 9-6 overall and 5-4 in the NE10, while the Purple Knights fall to 4-12 overall and 1-8 in the NE10. 
 
Junior Khalil Richard (Baltimore, Md.) posted his second consecutive 20-point game, as he shot 6-13 from the field and 5-8 from beyond the arc. Senior Taurus Adams II (Milwaukee, Wisc.) registered a double-double, scoring 14 points and bringing down 11 rebounds. Junior Greg Jones (Bronx, N.Y.) reached double-digit points with 10, and also pulled down seven rebounds. 
 
How It Happened
  • The Owls took an 11-8 with 15:38 remaining in the first half, as Richard scored nine points on three three-pointers. There were then eight lead changes until the the 2:25 mark in the first half, with Southern coming out with a 26-25 lead after Jones made a jumper. 
  • Southern scored the next five points to end the half, highlighted by a layup and an and-one free throw conversion by Bennett, to take a 33-25 lead into the break. 
  • Southern took a 39-30 lead, equaling their largest of the game, with 17:06 remaining. Saint Michael's scored the next eight points to cut Southern's lead back down to one with 14:25 remaining. 
  • Richard, Lyron Bennett, and Zack Penn would combine to score Southern's next nine points, and the Owls would take a 48-41 lead with 10:25 to go.
  • Saint Michael's took their first lead of the half, 53-52, with 6:15 remaining, and led 55-54 with 3:59 to go. 
  • With the score tied at 57 with 1:35 remaining, Isaiah Boissard made a layup and converted a free throw to give Southern a 60-57 lead. Boissard would make another layup with 27 seconds remaining, and Southern led 62-59. 
  • With the Owls up by two, Levar Allen stole the ball before Saint Michael's could get a shot off, and Southern held on to a 63-61 win.  
Notes
  • Richard scored 20 points for the second consecutive game, and his 20 points tied a season-high.
  • Richard has three 20-point games this month.
  • Since Dec. 10 against Saint Rose, Richard is averaging 15.5 points per game and shooting 46 percent from the field, a span of six games.
  • Richard set a new season-high with five three-pointers made. 
  • Adams II recorded his eighth double-double of the season and his 11th of his career.
  • Adams II has recorded four double-doubles in his last eight games, dating back to Dec. 4 against New Haven. 
  • Adams II is averaging 19.1 points per game and 10.6 rebounds per game since Dec. 4, a span of eight games. 
  • Southern has won six consecutive games against Saint Michael's, dating back to the 2015-16 season.
  • The Owls defense allowed just 63 points, their fewest in a game this season. 
  • Southern has forced at least 15 turnovers in three consecutive games. It is the first time they have forced at least 15 turnovers in three straight games since they did so in four consecutive games during the 2013-14 season in January against Saint Michael's, Stonehill, Franklin Pierce, and Merrimack.
  • Southern has won two consecutive one possession games, as they defeated Southern New Hampshire on Jan. 14, 77-76. The last time Southern won two consecutive one possession games was during the 1992-93 season, when they defeated Sacred Heart, 83-80, and Le Moyne, 78-75.

Southern will take a short road trip to Rindge, N.H. to take on Franklin Pierce University on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 7:30 p.m. before returning home to take on Stonehill on Jan. 25.
