Men's Basketball Pulls Away In Second Half To Knock Off Franklin Pierce, 75-66

RINDGE, N.H. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team defeated Franklin Pierce University, 75-66, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup in Rindge, N.H. The Owls improve to 10-6 overall and 6-4 in the NE10, while the Ravens fall to 11-6 overall and 6-4 in the NE10. 
 
Junior Greg Jones (Bronx, N.Y.) recorded a double-double with game-highs in points, with 25, and rebounds, with 15. Redshirt junior Isaiah Boissard (Walden, N.Y.) also registered a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while junior Khalil Richard (Baltimore, Md.) scored 15 points shooting 7-for-15. Freshman Lyron Bennett (Boston, Mass.) scored eight points, pulled down 11 rebounds, and had eight assists. 
 
How It Happened
  • Both teams exchanged baskets during the first four minutes of the game, and the Ravens led 10-9 with 15:56 remaining in the first half.
  • Southern took a 31-24 lead with 9:25 remaining by going on a 22-14 run. Boissard scored six of Southern's 22 points, while Zack Penn scored five of his own.
  • Franklin Pierce was able to tie the game at 33-33 with 4:08 remaining, and kept the game within five points the rest of the half, as Southern took a 42-40 lead into the locker room. 
  • Franklin Pierce momentarily took a 44-42 lead to start he half, but Southern quickly responded with a 17-5 run to take a 59-49 lead after Richard scored on a layup with 12:38 left in the game.
  • The Ravens cut Southern's lead down to 61-58 with 9:57 remaining, but Southern responded again by going on a 12-1 run to take a 73-59 lead, their largest of the game, with 4:00 left. Jones scored eight of Southern's 12 points, including two dunks. 
  • Franklin Pierce would get as close to 73-66 with 46 seconds remaining, but Southern held on for a nine-point victory.

  • Jones recorded career-highs in points (25), rebounds (15), offensive rebounds (eight), field goals made (nine), and free throws made (seven).
  • Jones became the first Southern player to record at least 25 points and 15 rebounds in a game since Desmond Williams did so Feb. 6, 2016 against Adelphi. 
  • Jones recorded his first career double-double. 
  • Jones' 25 points scored were tied for the most points scored by a Southern player this season. Taurus Adams II  had 25 against New Haven on Dec. 4 and C.J. Seaforth had 25 against Goldey-Beacom on Nov. 10. 
  • Jones scored 16 of his 25 points in the second half, shooting 6-8 overall in the final 20 minutes.
  • Boissard recorded his second career double-double, and his since first having 10 points and 12 rebounds against Queens on Nov. 20. 
  • Richard has scored at least 15 points in three consecutive games, and scored in double figures in 11 of his last 13 games played dating back to Nov. 13 against Caldwell. 
  • Since Dec. 10 against Saint Rose, Richard is averaging 15.4 points per game and shooting 46.1 percent from the field, a span of seven games.
  • Bennett set a new career-high in rebounds with 11 and tied a career-high in assists with eight, last done on Jan. 14 against Southern New Hampshire. 
  • Bennett grabbed 10 rebounds in the second half. 
  • Southern had two players record double-doubles in a game for the second time this season, as it also happened on Nov. 20 against Queens. Adams II had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Boissard had 10 points and 12 rebounds in that game.
  • The last time Southern had at least three players record 10 rebounds in a game was also against Queens on Nov. 20, as Penn had 10 rebounds as well. 
  • Before this season, the last time Southern had at least three players record at least 10 rebounds in a game was on Nov. 12, 2016 against Holy Family, when Adams II, Jerry Luckett, Jr., and Austin Carter all had double-digit rebounds. 
  • Southern grabbed a season-high 53 rebounds, their most rebounds in a game since pulling down 58 rebounds on Feb. 10, 2016 against American International.
  • Southern has won three consecutive games for the second time this season, and has won seven of their last nine games dating back to Dec. 4. 
  • Southern handed Franklin Pierce their first home loss of the season.
