Men's Basketball's Comeback Bid Falls Short To Stonehill

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team fell to Stonehill, 67-59, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. The Owls drop to 10-7 overall and 6-5 in the NE10, while the Skyhawks improve to 11-8 overall and 7-4 in the NE10. 
 
Junior Greg Jones (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 31 points, a new career-high, grabbed eight rebounds, and shot 12-20 from the field and 6-9 from three-point range. Taurus Adams II (Milwaukee, Wisc.) recorded a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. 
 
How It Happened
  • Stonehill jumped out to a quick start, taking a 21-9 lead with 9:47 remaining. Southern cut the lead down to 25-17, but Stonehill responded by extending their lead to 30-19. Khalil Richard knocked down a three-pointer from beyond half court to end the half, but the Skyhawks took a 33-25 lead into the break.
  • Stonehill took their largest lead of the game, 49-33, with 14:12 remaining by going on a 16-8 run to open the half. Jones went on a personal 8-0 run, fueled by back-to-back three-pointers to cut Stonehill's lead to 51-41 with 10:55 remaining.
  • Stonehill upped their lead to 59-44 with 6:06 remaining, but the Owls went on a 10-0 run to trim Stonehill's lead to 59-54 with 2:09 remaining.  
  • With 24 seconds remaining, Adams II made a three-pointer to make the score 63-59, but Stonehill made their final four free throws to hang on for the win. 
     


Notes
  • Jones recorded career-highs in points (31), field goals made (12), and three-pointers made (six). Jones previously set career highs in points and field goals made in Southern's last game on Jan. 25 against Franklin Piece, with 25 points and nine made field goals. 
  • Jones' 31 points were a new season-high for a Southern player. Jones also became the first Southern player since March 1 of last season to score at least 30 points in a game, when Kealen Ives scored 37 points against Stonehill in the first round of the NE10 Tournament. 
  • Jones' six three-pointers made tied a season-high for a Southern player this year, as  C.J. Seaforth made six against Concordia on Nov. 23.
  • Adams II recorded his ninth double-double of the season and his 12th of his career.
  • Adams II became the first Southern player to record at least nine double-doubles in season since Desmond Williams recorded 17 in the 2015-16 season.
