Allen Hits Buzzer Beater to Complete Comeback Against Assumption, 69-67

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Freshman Levar Allen's (Richmond, Va.) layup at the buzzer helped the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team come back from a 19-point deficit to defeat Assumption, 69-67, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. The Owls improve to 11-7 overall and 7-5 in the NE10, while the Greyhounds fall to 10-9 overall and 4-8 in the NE10.

Redshirt junior Isaiah Boissard (Walden, N.Y.) led the offense for the Owls as he scored 21 points and shot 9-for-16 and pulled down five rebounds. Junior Greg Jones (Bronx, N.Y.) recorded his second double-double in three games, scoring 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds while also blocking two shots. Senior Taurus Adams II (Milwaukee, Wisc.) and junior C.J. Seaforth (Hamden, Conn.) added 12 points apiece. 
 
How It Happened
  • Assumption started out hot, leading 13-4 with 14:42 remaining in the first half. Assumption then upped their lead to 21-7 with 8:21 remaining, their largest of the half.
  • Southern went on a 16-5 run, with Boissard scoring all 16 points for the Owls and shooting 7-for-8 from the field during the run, to cut Assumption's lead to 26-23 with 3:17 remaining. Assumption would then take a 29-23 lead into halftime.
  • Assumption opened the second half on a 13-2 run to take a 42-25 with 16:56 remaining. The Greyhounds eventually took a 63-44 lead with 7:37 remaining, their largest of the game. 
  • Southern went on an 11-2 run to cut Assumption's lead to 65-55 with 5:10 remaining in the game. After two Assumption free throws, the Owls then went on a 14-0 run to end the game, as Allen made a free throw that tied the game and then made a layup at the buzzer to win it for Southern, 69-67. 
  • Overall, Southern ended the game on a 25-4 run in the final 7:30, shooting 8-for-13 from the field and 5-9 from beyond the arc in that span, and held Assumption to 1-for-8 shooting and 0-for-5 from three-point range. Seaforth scored eight of his 12 points in the final four miniutes, which included two three-pointers. 


Notes
  • Boissard recorded a career-high 21 points, surpassing his previous best of 16 done twice earlier this season.
  • Jones recorded his second career double-double, last doing so against Franklin Pierce on Jan. 22. 
  • Jones is shooting 54.6 percent from the field over his last nine nine games and his averaging 15.4 points per game. 
  • This is the third game this season that Southern has come back from at least 10 points and won. The Owls came back from a 10-point deficit, twice, against the University of New Haven on Dec. 4 and a 15-point deficit against Goldey-Beacom on Nov. 10. 
  • The last time the Owls came back from at least 19 points and won was on Jan. 29. 2013 against Southern New Hampshire, when they came back from 27-4, a 23-point deficit, and won 62-56.
  • Southern has won eight consecutive games against the Greyhounds, dating back to the 2012-13 season.
