Men's Basketball Wins Nail-Biter Over Pace University In Overtime

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball pulled off a thrilling victory over the Pace University Setters, 98-94 in overtime, at the Goldstein Fitness Center. The Owls improve to 13-9 overall and 8-7 in the NE10, while the Setters fall to 16-9 overall and 8-8 in the NE10. With the win, the Owls also sweep the season-series against the Setters, as they previously defeated them, 64-61, on Jan. 4. 
 
Isaiah Boissard (Walden, N.Y.) led the Owls' offense, which featured five double-digit scorers. Boissard scored a career and game-high 31 points on 9-14 shooting, including a perfect 4-4 from beyond the arc. Greg Jones (Bronx, N.Y.) poured in 20 points and added nine rebounds, while Lyron Bennett (Boston, Mass.) scored 13 points on shot 4-8 from the field. C.J. Seaforth (Hamden, Conn.) registered 13 points, and nailed the game-tying three-pointer at the end of regulation, and Levar Allen (Richmond, Va.) chipped in with 12 points.
 
How It Happened
  • Both offenses started the game on fire, with the Setters leading 18-14 with 14:22 remaining in the first half.
  • Southern was able to tie the game at 28 with 7:12 remaining after Jones scored on a layup and Boissard scored eight points, but Pace quickly retook a two-point lead. Southern then went on a 10-0 to take a 38-30 lead, their largest of the half, and forced the Setters to call a timeout with 4:39 remaining. Boissard scored six of Southern's 10 points during the run.
  • Pace scored six straight points after the timeout, and kept it within one-possession the rest of the half. With the score tied at 44, Allen hit a layup and converted on the and-one opportunity before the end of the half, and the Owls took a 47-44 lead into the break. 
  • Southern held a 51-50 lead with 18:13 remaining. Pace went on a 13-5 run to take a 63-56 lead with 12:32 remaining. 
  • The Owls went on a 10-4 run to cut Pace's lead to 67-66. The Setters immediately went on a 9-2 run to extend their lead to 76-68 with 7:24 remaining, their largest lead of the game.
  • Southern tied the game at 76-76 with 4:15 remaining after Jones scored on a layup, and eventually took a 78-76 lead, totaling a 10-0 run. 
  • Pace took a 79-78 lead on a three-pointer, and extended their lead to 85-82 with 13 seconds remaining. Seaforth nailed a three-pointer from the corner with four seconds remaining to tie the game at 85, sending the game into overtime.
  • Bennett got overtime started with a three-pointer to give Southern the lead, and Pace was never able to recover. Southern outscored the Setters 13-9 in overtime, with Bennett scoring five of Southern's points, to seal the win.
 

Notes 
  • Boissard registered his first career 30-point game, and tied a season-high for points scored by a Southern player. Jones scored 31 points against Stonehill on Jan. 25.
  • Boissard also registered career-highs in three-pointers made and free throws made, and tied a season-high with nine field goals made.
  • Jones recorded his fourth game of at least 20 points scored this season, all of which have came in the last seven games.
  • Jones dished out a career-high five assists.
  • Bennett has scored in double-figures in all three games this month, and is shooting 51.7 percent from the field and is 5-8 from beyond the arc in February.
  • Allen tied a career-high 12 points scored, last done on Jan. 14 against Southern New Hampshire.
  • Penn scored a season-high nine points, and also picked up eight rebounds. 
  • Boissard and Bennett both played 41 minutes. The last time a Southern player played over 40 minutes in a game was on  Feb. 16, 2019, when Isaiah McLeod did so against Le Moyne. 
  • Boissard and Bennett became the first pair of Southern teammates to play in over 40 minutes in the same game since McLeod, Kealen Ives, and Ulyen Coleman did so in a double-overtime game against Southern New Hampshire on Jan. 12, 2019.
  • Boissard scored 20 points in the first half, the most by a Southern player in any half during a game this season. The last time a Southern player scored at least 20 points in a half was during the NE10 Semifinals game against New Haven on March 6, 2019. Seaforth scored 21 points during the second half of play. 
  • This was Southern's first overtime game of the season, and their first since Feb. 16, 2019 against Le Moyne, a 97-91 victory. 
  • Last season, the Owls defeated Pace in Pleasantville, N.Y. in overtime as well, an 86-82 victory on Dec. 8, 2018. 
  • Southern improves to 17-3 in their last 20 games against the Setters, dating back to the 2010-11 season, and have won 12 of their last 13 meetings against Pace dating back to Feb. 19, 2014.
  • Southern has also won five of their last six games on the road against Pace.
  • The Owls shot at least 50 percent from the field for the fifth time this season. 
  • Southern made a season-high 26 free throws in 29 attempts. 
  • Southern's 98 points scored were their second most in a game this season. They scored 110 points against Concordia on Nov. 23. 
  • Pace entered the game allowing an average 63.7 points per game first in the NE10. With their 98 points scored, Southern scored the most points in a game against the Setters this season. The Owls also became the second team this season to shoot at least 50 percent in a game against Pace and at least 45 percent from three-point range.
