Adams II Leads Men's Basketball Past Saint Rose, 91-72, On Senior Day

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team defeated the College of Saint Rose, 91-72, in the Owls' final regular-season home game of the year at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls sweep the season series against Saint Rose and improve to 15-10 overall and 10-8 in the NE10, while Golden Knight drop to 5-22 overall and 2-16 in conference play. With Pace losing to American International College, the Owls can now finish no lower than third in the NE10 Southwest Division standings, and have automatically clinched a berth in the NE10 Quarterfinals of the conference tournament. This is the Owls' highest finish in the Southwest Division since also finishing in third during the 2016-17 season.

Prior to the start of the game, Southern honored Taurus Adams II (Milwaukee, Wisc.) for Senior Day. Adams II had a memorable Senior Day with his 10th double-double of the season after tallying 21 points and 19 rebounds. Four other players reached double-figures in points, as junior Greg Jones (Bronx, N.Y.) also scored 21 points and added nine rebounds, a block and two steals. Freshman Lyron Bennett (Boston, Mass.) finished with 11 points and 12 assists, his first career double-double, while fellow freshman Levar Allen (Richmond, Va.) scored  a career-high 15 points and shot 6-11 from the field. Zack Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) added 10 points and shot 5-7 from the field.

First Half
  • Allen powered the offense early on, scoring six points on two three-pointers to give Southern a 13-12 lead with 14:36 remaining.
  • Southern's lead grew to 24-19 after a made jumper by Jones, by Saint Rose was able to go on a mini 8-2 run to take a 27-26 lead.
  • The score remained nearly even for the next four and a half minutes, but Southern came out on top, 34-32, with 3:46 remaining.
  • Adams II then scored six of Southern's next eight points to end the half, highlighted by a dunk off a pass from Penn, to take a 42-36 lead into the locker room.

Second Half
  • Jones and Bennett opened the second half by making three-straight three's, and Adams II scored on a layup and converted the three-point play to give Southern 54-38 lead. After Saint Rose made two free throws, Isaiah Boissard (Walden, N.Y.) nailed a three-pointer, and Jones and Bennett scored on jumpers as Southern took a 61-40 lead with 12:01 remaining, their largest of the game.
  • The Owls eventually took a 65-42 lead with 12:01 remaining after two free throws by Jones. Overall, Southern opened the second half on a 23-6 run, shooting 8-13 from the field and 4-5 from three-point range. Southern's defense also held the Golden Knights to 1-11 shooting during the run.
  • Southern maintained a lead of nearly 20 points the rest of the way, with the highlight play of night coming from an alley-oop pass from Boissard to Jones, to cap off Southern's 19-point win.
