Men's Basketball Blows Past Adelphi In Second Half, Wins 94-78 To Finish Regular Season

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team defeated Adelphi University, 94-78, at the Center for Recreation and Sport in Garden City, N.Y in the Owls' final regular-season game of the year, Southern's third win in a row. The Owls finish the regular season at 16-10 overall and 11-8 in the NE10, while Panthers fall to 18-10 overall and 11-8 in conference play. 
 
Freshman Lyron Bennett (Boston, Mass.), the reigning NE10 Rookie of the Week, tied his career-high with a team-high 22 points on 8-13 shooting. Fellow freshman Levar Allen (Richmond, Va.) set a career-high with 21 points on 9-15 shooting. Redshirt junior Isaiah Boissard (Walden, N.Y.) added 19 points and shot 8-11 from the field while grabbing eight rebounds, and senior Taurus Adams II (Milwaukee, Wisc.) scored 18 points on 8-12 shooting.
 
First Half
  • Southern came out of the gates on fire, leading 12-4 just two and a half minutes into the game. Adelphi went on an 8-2 run to cut Southern's lead to 14-12.
  • Bennett and Allen made back-to-back three pointers to get the Owls' offense back on track, and Bennett scored 11 of the next 16 Southern points to give the Owls a 30-27 lead with 8:38 remaining.
  • The Owls then extended their lead to 39-33 after Boissard made a three-pointer with 3:24 left in the half, but Adelphi was able to tie the game at 41-41 with 1:06 remaining.
  • C.J. Seaforth (Hamden, Conn.) gave Southern the lead with a three-pointer before the halftime buzzer, and the Owls led 44-41 going into the break.
  • Allen scored 12 points on 5-8 shooting in the first half, while Bennett shot 5-7 and scored 11 points.


Second Half
  • Both offenses carried over their hot shooting from the first half, and Southern held a 53-52 lead after the first four minutes.
  • After a Boissard made a layup, Southern's lead jumped to 61-57 with 13:18 remaining.
  • Adelphi went on an 8-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 65-61, with 11:51 remaining, forcing Southern to call a timeout.
  • The Owls immediately went on an 11-2 run to take a 72-67 lead, highlighted by six points from Adams II and a go-ahead corner three-pointer from Seaforth, forcing the Panthers to call timeout with 8:28 left in the game.
  • Adelphi was able to cut Southern's 76-74, but Southern then went on an 8-0 run take an 84-74 lead with 3:56 remaining and forcing an Adelphi timeout.
  • The Owls then ended the game on a 10-4 run, including hitting all six of their free throws, to seal a 16-point win.
  • Overall, the Owls went on an 18-4 run in the final 6:21, turning a 76-74 lead into a 94-78 win. 
  • Adams II erupted for 14 points in 6-9 shooting in the second half.
  • Southern shot 60.6 percent in the second half, knocking down 20 of their 33 shot attempts.
 
Notes
  • Bennett has tied his career-high in points with 22 on two other occasions this season, including last week's game against University of New Haven. He also scored 22 points against University of the Sciences on Dec. 10, 2019.
  • Bennett now has 99 assists on the season, moving into third all-time among Southern freshman in a single season. The freshman record for most assists in a single-season is held by Mike Parenti  with 175 during the 1988-89 season, followed by Robbie Thompson with 111 during the 1995-96 season.
  • Allen scored career-high 21 points, his first career 20-point game, one game after setting his career-high with 15 against The College of Saint Rose.
  • Bennett and Allen are the first Southern freshman to score at least 20 points in the same game since at least the 2005-06 season.
  • Boissard scored at least 15 points in a game for the seventh time this season.
  • Adams II has scored at least 15 points in a game for the 15th time this season.
  • Adams II became the first Southern player score at least 350 points and grab at least 200 rebounds in a season since Jerry Luckett, Jr. (Milwaukee, Wisc.) during the 2016-17 season.
  • Southern shot a season-high 59.4 percent from the field.
  • The Owls had four players score at least 15 points in a game for the first time this season. The last time it happened was on Jan. 23, 2019 against Franklin Piece. 
  • Southern has won back-to-back conference games by at least 15 points for the first time since the 2015-16 season, when they defeated St. Michael's by 21 on Jan. 1 and Stonehill by 16 on Jan. 9.
  • Southern scored at least 90 points in two consecutive games for the first time this season. They did it once last season as well, when they scored 100 points in each game on Jan. 23, 2019 against Bentley and Jan. 26, 2019 against Franklin Pierce. 
  • This was Southern's first win against Adelphi on the road since Nov. 11, 2015.
  • The Owls tied their largest margin of victory in a road game against the Panthers, as they also won by 16 points, 68-52, on Dec. 1, 2010.
