Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past Dominican College, 22-4, In Season Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn.- The Southern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team opened the 2020 season with a 22-4 win against Dominican College at Jess Dow Field. The Owls open the year at 1-0, while Dominican sits at 0-1.
 
Junior Hailey Gordon (Niantic, Conn.) and sophomore Kelly Jagodzinski (Stamford, Conn.) both reached career-highs in goals with five apiece, while Gordan added two assists and Jagodzinski had one. Bayleigh Takacs (Sparta, N.J.) recorded a career-high in goals with four goals while handing out two assists. Junior Steph Seymour (North Branford, Conn.)) had three goals and two assists. Seymour also recorded 14 draw controls, tying a single-game program record.
 
In goal, junior Laura Morton (Somers, Conn.) stopped 11 of Dominican's 15 shots on goal in the Owls' win.
 
First Half
  • Both teams traded goals to a 2-2 tie with just under eight minutes to play before the Owls rattled off four unanswered goals - two from Gordon - to take a 6-2 with 12 minutes to play in the half. 
  • Southern then exploded on an 8-2 run over the remaining time in the half to take a 14-4 lead into the intermission.
  • In the Owls' run, Takacs and Jagodzinski each scored three times.


Second Half
  • Sophomore Karlie Rowe (Niantic, Conn.) started off the second half with her first goal of the season, and Southern never looked back. 
  • Southern held Dominican scoreless over the final 30 minutes of play en route to its 18-goal victory.
  • Seymour and Takacs both had a goal and two assists in the second half, while freshman Julia Shapiro (Easton, Conn. ) scored her first career goals.
  • Morton stopped all seven of Dominican's shots-on-goal in the second half. 
 
Player Notes
  • Gordon and Jagodzinski became the first Southern players to score at least five goals in a season opener since Elaina Heiple (Cheshire, Conn.) on March 10, 2011 against Mercy.
  • Seymour tied a program record with 14, also held by Grace Martha on April 24, 2007 against Assumption.
  • Caroline White (Madison, Conn.) scored her first career goal in the first half to give Southern a 6-2 lead.
  • Mia Pulisciano (Cheshire, Conn.), a transfer from Endicott, scored her first goal as an Owl during the first half to give Southern a 10-4 lead.
  • Shapiro became the first Southern freshman to score multiple goals in a season opener since Samantha Cozzolino (Hamden, Conn.) did so on March 12, 2016 against Merrimack.
  • Emily Rossini (West Hartford, Conn.) caused four turnovers, a new-career high.

Team Notes
  • Southern won their season opening game for the first time since Feb. 24, 2017, when they beat Saint Thomas Aquinas 14-6 at Jess Down Field. 
  • The Owls' 22 goals scored was tied for their second most goals in a game in program history, and tied for their most ever in a game at Jess Dow Field. They last scored 22 goals on March 14, 2012 against Post at home. Their team record of 23 was done on April 5, 2008 against Franklin Pierce. 
  • Southern's 18-point win tied their largest margin of victory in program history. They last won by 18 goals on March 17, 2016 against Post, an 18-0 victory.
  • Southern recorded program-highs in points and largest margin of victory in a season opener.
  • This was Southern's first home win since March 28, 2018, when they defeated American International 14-10. 
  • This was the fewest goals Southern allowed in a game since April 11, 2018, when they allowed three to Le Moyne. 
  • This was the fewest goals Southern allowed in a season-opener in program history. 
  • Southern's 16 caused turnovers were their most in a game since April 27, 2016 against American International College.
